BBC News - China's Yellow River bombed to break ice
Ryan- That had to be really good for the fish population. That river is so polluted, though, it probably did not matter.
Looks like they used their Tu-16s (or their indigenous version of them) to do the deed. Those aircraft are about as old as our B-52s, maybe even older!
We would have sent icebreakers, just like we do in the Great Lakes and St Lawrence. The Yalu is big enough.
Ice is a good shock absorber which means blasting is not very efficient. In addition placing explosive by hand would have been significantly cheaper (even if significantly less fun ) I suspect this is more a training exercise than an ice breaking one.
The late Roz Roose of NY knew how to throw a Communist Party & didn't need fancy-shmancy ice-breakers. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Old planes sometimes lead to old ordinance. I wonder if they thought through the scenario of unexploded bombs laying on the ice.
