Mayor, your stand on this is clear. What I was trying to ask was where you draw the line in other matters where there are similar issues. My question was not about Schuey--or at least I didn't intend it to be about Schuey. You were so adamantly opposed to members of the press, that I wondered if it was a backlash against the press or if you simply didn't think anyone had an obligation to give updates.. Clearly politicians are on the other side of the line than Schuey, and since it was an obvious conclusion, I wanted to see if you would admit that there is a line somewhere out there.

I guess you misunderstood. My question was about the principle, not about this Schuey situation. Oh well, let's move on.

You want a three month update? Nothing's new. Are you happy now?

I speak for everyone with a medical problem, not Mr. Schumacher. You should to.

You say you are a fan who deserves something. Who made you his more arrogant fan that you think you are owed something?

A real fan wouldn't think of themselves. They would think of family and what they are going through without the press parsing every word, splashing photos on tabloids, or speculating if the dress Corinna wore today means something.

Michael owes you nothing and certainly his wife and children don't. Maybe you should stop being a fan so they won't have to worry about offending you.

Where does this this "right" come from? Unless you are a member of Schumi's immediate family you (and I) "deserve" nothing. Just because Schumi is famous, he and his family do not lose their privacy rights. Sorry.

For me, Steve Jobs did the right thing -- and took a lot of heat for it. In the end, it shouldn't matter what his health means to the value of Apple. He's just one person in a large organization. Making his pain, suffering, and anguish public would serve nothing.

When it comes to politicians and people in power over our lives, remember that most of what was told to us about Reagan's assassination attempt was fed to us either wrong or heavily filtered. The reason, Reagan had his finger on the button. That's more than being an ex-F1 pilot.

When Reagan developed Alzheimer's, he asked to be left alone. Here was a guy who spent his entire life in front of the public -- but he wanted his privacy -- and the press gave him that.

I don't see why Michael shouldn't also have the same ability if his family wants it that way.

The Reagan thing is a fair comment. He did "slowly fade away" as Douglas MacArthur once said. And it is a difficult thing in the eyes of the law to see if one can "regain" the status as a private citizen. In theory, it makes sense.

In hindsight, the Jobs thing turned out to be not much of a big thing. At the time, I thought that, since he was so vital to Apple, and since he was the CEO, he had a duty to his shareholders to provide disclosure. I think the SEC would also agree with this in a public company--material information which affects the stock price should not be withheld. But, he did an admirable job in providing a good management team and the transition has been as smooth as could be expected.

I am a big believer that the proof is in the pudding. While I disagreed with Jobs and his failure to come clean, in hindsight it produced hardly a blip on the company's performance.

    Some nice words from DC.

David Coulthard (Driver), 24 March - Dear Michael, first of all I am so very sorry that you have found yourself in this situation, sorry for your family, lead by Corinna and all the pain they must be experiencing as you make your recovery. When I reflect on our racing together I am filled with a number of emotions. This is because I met 3 Michaels during our time racing together. First of all the family man, remember when we ended up riding horses whilst taking time off in Australia, near to Cairns? or the after party in Hockenheim when we ended up singing karaoke together? Petra went in the pool at the end of the night! The racer, unbelievably committed and undeniably the fastest of our generation and that’s not taking into account all the records broken along the way! The blunt sportsman! On reflecting I feel it wouldn’t be correct not to acknowledge the few differences of opinion that we had along the way! I will always remember Spa 98 when you arrived at my garage during the race dragging Jean Todt as he tried to stop you entering the Mclaren garage! Racing against you brought out the best in all of us, I can say without fear of contradiction that your talent, your commitment and the support of your nearest and dearest took you to a level that most of us could only dream. You gave my career credibility and made me work harder, drive faster and achieve more than I would have done with lesser competition. I have always admired your speed and commitment and I look forward to being able to reminisce over a Bacardi and coke about how the kids today don’t know how difficult we had it in our day ! Michael, I am thinking of you and your family, praying that this situation can be over and life can return to normal. With my greatest respect, DC.

    Bad question.

Your question should have been: if a former President of the US were.........."

I assume the answer ought to be: 'not if the family wished privacy'

Actually, my technique is a little different. When trying to "grade" responses, I find it easier to set out the parameters and move toward the middle, rather than seeking the middle.

Set out the right extreme and then the left extreme, before seeking to establish where we stand in the middle of those two extremes. I asked about a current President, because I thought I knew his answer--but if he had answered differently, I would have shaped my argument to find the boundary of where he would change his stance.

So, while it may seem an obvious answer for a sitting President, I still had to ask than to put a stake in the ground in order to probe "inside" that stake.

The former chief doctor of the Formula One claims "misjudgment" from medical staff in the treatment Michael Schumacher means the German legend is unlikely to ever recover.

Schumacher has been in an induced coma in a Grenoble hospital since late December after he crashed while skiing in the French Alps.

While Schumacher's family is publically optimistic, there have been claims that only a miracle would see him make a full recovery.

Gary Hartstein, F1 sport's chief doctor between 2005 and 2012, says he has been told of "serious lapses of judgement" from those treating Schumacher.

Hartstein claims he has heard from "usually impeccable sources" that these lapses "could, and almost certainly did, worsen the outcome in Michael's case".

While not revealing specifics of the alleged mismanagement, Hartstein has made the extraordinary claim that staff at the University Hospital may have decided not to be completely honest with Schumacher's family due to their bungling of his treatment.

Hartstein says the family of a patient with Schumacher's "terribly dismal prognosis" would normally be pressured into transferring their loved one to a specialised clinic for long-term coma patients.

"It is possible that the staff at Grenoble feel duty-bound to NOT place any pressure on the family to transfer out, despite the terribly dismal prognosis … because of the clear (but unquantifiable) contribution of medical misjudgement to that prognosis," Hartstein wrote in his latest medical blog.

"As time goes on it becomes less and less likely that Michael will emerge to any significant extent."

Hartstein says the question of why Schumacher has not been transferred out of the Intensive Care Unit and to another clinic remains unanswered.

"So why is he still in Grenoble?

"It's important to remember that Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds are a very limited resource. Every day intensivists are asked to admit critically ill patients to units whose beds are all filled.

"Therefore, I think it is inevitable that should the status quo continue, the ICU staff may well, at some point in the not-distant future, decide that the patient they've just been asked to admit has a higher need for that bed than Michael, given his clinical situation and prognosis. This then could be a reason to organise a transfer – to a private clinic, or to an ICU-like environment that his entourage could build at his home."

He says fans of the seven-time world champion should brace for the worst.

"I've realised that perhaps the lack of status updates has given us all a chance to move on a bit, to process what’s happening, and to start to ... detach.

"And I think this is probably one of the unexpected 'benefits' to the media strategy chosen by Michael's family. Somehow, I get the feeling that people are going to be OK, no matter what happens, because they've now had the time to process this all. I just regret that to get here, you've all had to work through feeling abandoned. That will go away too. I hope."

Just last week, a spokeswoman for the Schumacher family said the waking-up phase of Michael is continuing that it would "take as long as it takes".

    But Hartstein isn't so optimistic.

"The longer one remains in a vegetative state, the less the likelihood of emerging, and the higher the chances of severe ramifications if the patient does in fact emerge.

"Patients who are in a persistent/permanent vegetative state have lifespans that are measured in months to a few years.
"Longer survivals have been described, but are exceptional."

Look, I have the least emotional connection to Michael than anyone else here, but if he's going to be in a vegetative state it's better that he passes on.

My grandmother spent the last 15 years of her life unable to speak or (usefully) use her right side. She would recognize you and actually understood her second language (Polish) more than her primary, but that was it. She was helpless and couldn't fend for herself.

And I'm sorry, but the last thing I want his family to go through is what my family went through. It's a terrible thing to experience.

Miracles happen everyday though, and I hope he's one of them.
