    Hi,

I read a fascinating 7 page thread quite recently, with a build up to a Vetro being auctioned in the US. I'm wondering how people see values since that thread (last posting 31 Jan) where the car sold with com for circa $114k.

I'm keen to buy a vetro - used to have one back in the early 80s _ but can't find a really superb Euro dry sump car. I'm also looking to buy a RHD 328GTB but again, it's like trying to find rocking horse poo.

If anyone can help with either, please let me know.

    All the best,

    Tony

A very nice blue one just sold in Austria (fchat member) I believe for *close to* asking price which was 100Euros IIRC. Prices are higher in Europe - at around 130USD+...prices in US seem to be 95-115 ish...this is based on the public stuff. Obviously cars like this also change hands without being listed.

    Good luck!

    Hi,

I went to see+buy one in the UK at GBP110k on Monday, ($182k) but it just wasn't up to what I expected (and want). I'm staggered by how low the values are in the US compared to the UK. As another example, I'd happily pay GBP60k / $100k for a low miles perfect RHD 328GTB, but I've got no chance!

    Cheers,

    Tony

Judging by the condition, and the Dino's along side of it ... a FORTUNE.

I have a glass US spec one and have been approached to sell in the six figures....the problem.....the buyers think it's all the money, and the owners like myself that may sell can't buy a damn thing to replace it for that money....therefore, no motivation to sell.
Interesting times ahead for many of us.

Hi Alex, That's the one I went to see on Monday... (GBP110k)

The Spellbound car won't be ready until June-ish.

I don't know the blue one but that appears to be in the States?

I have one to go and see in Munich and one in Madrid, but both need work which is not really the plan. My 206GT was supposed to be through it's resto in Jan, then Feb, then this month, now April. I really want to try and avoid any more lengthy delays if at all possible, as it's seriously frustrating.

Any help or pointers for either the Vetro or 328GTB (or both!) gratefully accepted.

    Bests,

    Tony

So you didn't think the Cartwright one was up to what you expected?? Obviously I can only comment from the photos, however it looks like its has had a total resto job on it so... what was there not to like?

There were a grand total of 130 RHD 328 GTB imported in the U.K (77 "série 1" and 53 "série 2" with modified suspension and convex wheels) and some of these - about a dozen - have left the U.K mainly for Australia, where the 328 GTB was not imported from the factory. Add attrition, etc...you're looking at a "pool" smaller than a hundred cars...

154 "Vetroresinas" were imported in the U.K by Maranello Concessionnaires from the factory, and Australia got its own quota, so you may have more luck with the "Vetroresina"...

And going from the current market, Cartwright's reputation and the their pricing strategy, this price is what I would expect.

I doubt you will have better luck with locating original Vetros compared to 328's as many of the above Vetros were converted for racing, possibly wrecked(unlike the 328's on the whole) and as the Vetros were around 10 years earlier, attrition will probably be even higher so I don't think so....

    +1.
Considering Harry Metcalfe sold his Vetro for about that-possibly more, (ok it was largely original, however had quite a few "needs" from what I saw of it to make it a reliable and a perfect driver) I think 110 for a Cartwright resto is actually very reasonable.....

The Cartwright car does appear to the best car on the market. She presents remarkably well. Seat covers are original as is most of the interior, but it looks fine and the rest of the car is very well sorted. I would personally do without the larger front air dam but to each his own.

Interesting ... it's been on the Forza website for a WHILE.

I was there a year ago to look at different cars, and the blue car was not there, but there was a dark red glass car for which he'd already taken a deposit (and was never on the site).

    Okay.

Re the Cartwright car, I went up to Derby with a cheque, expecting to buy the best Vetro in the world. It wasn't. On any classic Ferrari I buy, I expect a tool kit, wallet & books, and good paperwork. The paintwork wasn't great (I'd have had to respray but I'm fussy) and the engine lid had "shrivelled" upwards/buckled inwards so the panels couldn't fit. Obviously, I'd have wanted the correct shallow spoiler as well, as the DFS did not appear as a cost option until mid '77. It's clearly mechanically superb although I wasn't able to start or drive it. The interior is original and I liked it, but the boot was scruffy imho, and I'd have redone with O'Rourke. Maybe all these issues will be sorted by the time it's ready (I thought it was ready to roll, but it could be a couple of months yet) but I'm after something that's ready now, and as perfect as poss.

Re 328GTBs, there have also been quite a few swallowed up by FOC club racing etc., which doesn't help matters either. However, I'm fully aware of the numbers, and that's precisely why I'm after a 328GTB (I want the Vetro because it was my first Ferrari in the early 80s). Indeed, the rarity is exactly why I bought a 206GT instead of 246. If someone is going to spend money in a bubble, then at least go for rarity???

    Cheers.

Fair enough on all points I guess. Bizarre though having gone through what appears to be a great mechanical resto only for Cartwright to fall short on the body and ancillaries......

If I were you, and all imho of course I would still persevere with trying to find a Vetro as opposed to a 328. Unless of course you are willing to buy both : )

Did Cartwright mention their specific asking price? And was it at all negotiable
