While my 94 348 is down for a major I would like to check the notorious transmission ringnut that has the nasty habit of coming loose. I have searched this forum and others but have not found a procedure.

If you can point me to one it will much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Brewman

Their is a ring nut, behind the cover, right under the throwout bearing. You will need to have the pumpkin removed to access it.

There are also ring nuts on the ends of the main and lay shaft. However, to properly check those the gearbox needs to be removed from the subframe/car.

Thanks Ernie. I am concerned about the one I keep reading about that comes loose. Is this the one behind the T/O bearing ? My pumpkin is off so no problem getting to it. What should I look for and is there a torque rating ?

    Thanks,

It's not behind the throwout bearing, it's UNDER it, at the bottom of the bell housing. You are looking to make sure the ring nut is on nice and tight, and that it is peened properly. While you have the cover off it would be a good idea to replace the o-ring for it.

I'm no expert but I must say my 355 has one on the back of the clutch shaft as well.

Yep, need to check mine as well again, having burned up two gear boxes. It sucked when I started smelling that smell, like burning flesh, you don't forget it.
