Tom, that's a shame...are you saying that the sounds hasn't altered from day 1>? How does it compare with the Italia in your opinion now having experienced both cars>?

 

Hmm, F-chatter bigblock describes the exhaust note change on his Speciale from new to 2,500 kms as "massive" and it now being "perfect" (see his comments earlier in the thread). Could it be that some have different expectations? I also suspect new noise regulations play their part here, one of the reviewers commented on this.

 

Right. I guess it's different expectations.
The Speciale's certified noise-level is 108 dB (at least here in Germany). "Normal" cars usually don't have more than 88... I recall that 10dB more is double the noise, so it's 4 times louder than a normal car. For me that is more than sufficient...

I think this is always the way: the new cars are more capable and for that they lose some of that emotional connection.

Good thread. Thanks for the comparison write up, Avalente. I currently have a Scud and loving every moments with it. She has over 18k miles now and after seeing Speciale at the local dealer last weekend, I'm also curious on how other people are feeling about the upgrade.

 

What about the timbre? Volume alone is not decisive. In "my ears", the Speciale hears something "deeper" and therefore "more powerful" as the 458 Italia…

 

Right. The exhaust note is lower in pitch and sounds more raw due to the higher compression-ratio - a mean machine for me...

 

"mean" in comparison to such an engine? A nitro big-block 737 with more than 2000hp?

Noise is subjective. Elsewhere they were talking about the pop/crackle that cars make. Some love it, though I see nothing even remotely desirable about that noise. I actually would love to experience a super car with no exhaust noise at all. Just wind noise and acceleration would be best IMO.

I'm not at all surprised one person said it gets amazing and another said it doesn't change ands is worse than the 458.

From what I've heard in yt clips, the speciale is definitely not the best sounding 458 exhaust, but I'm sure plenty think it is.

Seriously, it's really hard to describe the difference between Italia and Speciale - maybe "more unrefined" would do it ???

 

In comparison to the Italia I hear a little bit Maserati Granturismo in the Speciale-sound, pithier, stronger, as the engine would have a small portion more cubic capacity.

Of course, if I compare the Speciale one to one with the Granturismo, the Speciale still sounds like a cat you step on her tail.

 

Not sure whether I am misunderstanding you here but as regards cubic capacity Italia & Speciale are identical at 4497 ccs...but may be you wanted to say "as if the engine would have a small portion more cubic capacity."

Definitely a deeper, throatier note. Some will like it, others like myself, will like the higher-pitched, more f1-inspired (pre-2014 v6 turbo) note. There's just something soulful and right about that f1 sound.
