All Original '67 275 GTB/4

Seems the father of this gentleman bought this dark blue/tan 4-cam in 1969 and his son has elected to part with it on Velocity. Here's a preview:

Call me sentimental but, man, I'd be hard-pressed to part with a car like this purchased by my late great Pops. Sure, it'll fund a retirement but 45 years qualifies as "family" for me!

Interior seems almost too pristine for original but it really does look beautifully kept. Would love to find out its serial, specifics and history.

I had a friend that sold his fathers Ferrari's and I could never understand how he didn't keep one of them?

Some of the cars had been with the father since we were kids.

Makes no sense to me.

 

It is obvious the seller didn't know about the current values of 275GT/Bs. Poor guy. He'd be looking at 10M or more if he held on to it another 10 years.

 

Sometimes, as Ferrari nuts, we do get a form of tunnel vision.

Two Briitish brothers owned a 250 TR and two (yes TWO!) GTOs until the mid to late 90s. At least one of the GTOs had been with them for 25 years and all the cars had been long term holds, costing, I believe. a few thousand pounds each when bought.

They sold for prices of < USD 10 million each, which seemed quite a lot at the time, although of course a steal at today's values.

Did they make a mistake? I think not. The brothers bought some old racing cars when no one wanted them, had lots of fun for many years and then sold them for, presumably, a life changing sum.

Of course there are more than a few multi millionaires with our enthusiasm, but there are also a lot of owners sitting on assets they might someday need to liquidate.

I met Peter Klutt at Pebble last year with the car and he did not seem inclined to sell the car. He took the time to talk to me and is a really great guy, like most Canadians. He plans on preserving the car in its current condition, which of course is fabulous.

 

It took Peter years and years to buy that blue 4 cam. He always offered more than the market value for it until finally they agreed to sell. IMHO the original cars are greatly undervalued. "Real" original cars are few and far between. There are lots of pretty 'restored' cars. The dark red Porsche that beat the blue 4 cam at Pebble Beach was a lot more of a fluff job than the Ferrari was.
Ironically Peter is more of a Ford guy with endless knowledge of those old models but it was the Ferrari that went to Pebble Beach and made the 60 mile run on those original tires to.

 

How much it cost.

 

If I remember correctly, he paid 250,000 dollars for it. Don't know if it was Canadian or US.

 

Saw this on the Velocity Channel a week or so ago. My good friend is the sellers neighbor, and has told me about this car for years. I won't divulge the sale price, but a few interesting notes: the seller depicted in the episode was actually a stand in, not the owner but an actor. There was a question as to the condition of the exhaust, which Peter had rebuilt in the episode, but the owner, a mechanic, said the original exhaust was on the car and fine. The "tear" on the seat was also non-existent.

I guess a little drama was needed to spice up the episode.

So much for "reality" TV...

 

BTW the "new" toolkit unwrapped in the episode is actually a 365 GTB/4 kit.

That maybe true... however, we do not know the circumstances of the seller, nor his age. He or someone in his family could being having health issues, etc and so the $$$ now may be more valuable then in the future. After all it is tough to spend $$$ when one is "pushing daisies" ...

How long ago was this car purchased by Peter Klutt? I HIGHLY DOUBT he purchased it for $250K USD, but stranger things have happened.....

 

I won't divulge the amount, but it definitely wasn't $250K US.

 

I just checked my TV listings and the episode will be rebroadcast on 4/19 at 12:30pm Eastern DST. Setting my DVR.

 

I agree, at some time you have to sell to take advantage of the value, and what good does it do sitting in a garage?

 

Myself and 4 other Canadians made the pilgrimage to Cavallino this year and poured over this car as well as talked at length to Peter who happens to live and work close to us . Peter showed us the car in detail and I was fascinated with how the paint had shrunk down over the years to reveal the weld seams showing in detail the construction of the body and especially the sections welded together to make up the roof.
