Eight different drivers won GPs, the first four gps were won by 4 different drivers and schumey pipped kimi by 2 points, and if i recall correctly it was a three way battle between schumey, kimi and montoya that was settled in the last 2 races. We will revisit this at the end of this year to see which year is more boring.....

so all the engineers that came before now were just boneheads because they could work with v12's v10's and v8's ? alright.

hybrids are interesting technology, but imo have only gained in market share because everybody believes the bs that it is a more efficient power plant. false.

we obviously do not share many common opinions on this sport.

i want unfettered engineering, speed, and performance, and you relish additional complications for the engineers to overcome even though it makes more sense to just draw the line from A to B. we will not see eye to eye.

 

2004 is right, and in 2002 ms got on the podium every race. 2003 was exciting however, more so than this year IMHO.

 

You are watching the wrong sport then.

Unfettered engineering, speed, and performance were the hallmarks of Can Am. Something that was en vogue 30 years ago...

Each to his own indeed. I think it depends on your background. As an engineer I accept that that lots of noise means wasted energy and less noise means a better design.

I like the way you can now hear other sounds. I find myself listening to the tyre squeal when cars start from the pits, or when there is a lockup. Thats all new and could not be heard before. The in-car radios are much clearer and even the commentary.

Having said that, it doesnt justify the changes because clearly most fans want the noise and they are the ones who pay at the end of the day.

 

I'll agree that was definitely the highlight of can am but you are nuts if you think a series like that wouldn't demolish anything else out there today. Indy would be gone. F1 would be gone.

Majority of fans aren't the insane car nuts as most of us here. They by into the glam and "pinnacle of Motorsport" farce that is the marketing machine. Most casual fans have no idea what "formula" is referring to and in my opinion that is done on purpose.

 

We all do what we do best.

 

I don't see many grandstands being erected at airports where engine noise is abound.

F1 is far, far more than ear splitting noise. If mere noise or lack of it is the demise of the sport it wasn't much of one to begin with.

 

You are making it way to cut and dry. The noise was a pinnacle element of the sport not the only element. Take away the 3 point shot in NBA and people will be pissed. Take away the slap shot in NHL and people will be pissed. They are taking hitting out of the NFL and people ARE pissed. Same with the sound in Motorsport.

I'm actually getting somewhat disappointed in some of the fans of F1: I always thought F1 fans are more into the leading edge of technology and the strategy games etc. But when I read some of the comments where noise seems to be the only thing thrilling, I wonder why they even bother with F1. They might as well watch NASCAR.

What happened to the sophisticated F1 fans? Are we just a bunch of Neanderthals who love loud noise?

 

The NBA existed before the 3 point shot and will exist if that shot changes. They are already talking about a bigger court and a 4 point shot and I'm sure fans complained the sport was ruined when the 3 point was introduced. Sports change, people complain. That is the nature of things.

I honestly can't remember when fans didn't moan about the sports they follow. Especially F1. To be even more specific regarding F1, I can't remember the last time drivers, teams and officials weren't complaining about something. It seems F1 wouldn't be quite the same sport if many weren't moaning that the sport is on the brink of extinction because of one issue or another.

Complaining about change and the sport of F1 are forever entwined.

 

I know that saving 60L on an F1 is irrelevant, but the technology to achieve that trickles down to road cars one day and that becomes very relevant.

Going on the moon looked irrelevant, but the new technologies, materials and research to get there became applied in our everyday life.
