I just purchased a 2004 360 Spider and I live in Texas. I didn't want to get a 200.00 fine for no license plate, but I also was unwilling to drill holes in my front bumper. There is a license plate frame that screws onto the tow hook, but that puts it right in front of the air intake. So I had a buddy of mine copy my plate and print out a vinyl sticker. It is the same size as the plate and the detail on it is excellent. So who want to take bets on whether or not I get mess with by the fuzz?

There is a 2 page thread on this topic in the regional area, USA West section of the forum. Look at the Texas sub forum. There is a post from Dallas that fines do not always occur...

    Bigilo,
There is a solution for the 360 from Fabspeed that attaches to the existing screw holes in the Modena undertray. You don't have to drill holes in the front bumper and it will be Texas legal. I recently did this on my Modena and it works great. I will take some pics tonight and post them for you. I think the vinyl option is a really great idea, but since it is not an official texas plate with the reflective coating, I think you could get some unwanted attention from the police with that solution if they ever figure it out. It could be viewed as a counterfeit plate.

Installation instructions indicate that you have to drill into the car. No thanks.

The sticker is the ONLY way to go. Good job. Make sure its a non reflective type so that they cant draw a laser bead on you. I would do the same thing if I felt uncomfortable with no plate. As it stands it's 70 bucks here but not enforced very often. Consider it a donation when it happens.

Oh...I bet you never get hassled for that.

It's the underside of the front bumper - who cares? They are usually curbed/scrapped to death anyway.

If it bothers you that much you can fabricate a bracket utilizing existing mounting holes for undertray ala Fabspeed.

A copy of a plate is not an officially issued plate. If you get pulled over and the LEO notices, you could be in a world of hurt. Get a bracket.

No front plate is PC for pullover, why give them the free ride?

I would never put a plate on front of car. We need to have front and rears in nj but I refuse. It's a $50 ticket. Worth it if you get pulled over.

The front license plate laws kill me...what a bunch of garbage. I have had to pay for it once on my 996 turbo and refuse to do it on my 430. Will just pay the fines as they come.

One more 'tax' I have to live with, I guess. Big Brother is watching...

Just checked the DMV code. Your replica plate is likely to be considered as "fictitious" which could subject you to up to a $200 fine.

    Yep...bad idea.

Good idea, but bad in practice..

one good natured officer told me:

"We give you two plates, we want you to mount two plates!"

    Dear Bigilo !
These are true facts about my case:
    I live in Austin Texas
    F360 Spider mileage: 70,400 !
Stopped by Police/Troopers/Sheriff more than 8 times
Warnings= 15 (4 of the no licence plate in the front)
    Tickets = Zero
One officer "Why don't you have your license plate in the front ?"
"it is with me sir, in the trunk ready to be installed" I said
"well, then again, who would want to drill holes in such a beautiful car?" with a smile :)

    so... up to you !

I like the sticker idea but i do not know if it would be more offending than no plate at all since it is definitely illegal to have a plate copy ! in all case, keep the official plate in the trunk with you because it is also very illegal to have one plate... in other words, if you loose one plate in texas , you have to order two new ones (new numbers)

    Cheers

Did these all occur after 9/1/13 when the law changed in Texas? Prior to that time, it was illegal to not have a front plate, but there was no fine so police did not ticket, they only gave warnings. Now that a fine is proscribed by law, LEOs have more incentive to issue an a actual ticket.

NY has a front plate law. I have been driving around my nicer cars since 1986 without a front plate. I have never received a ticket for "no front plate" yet. I'll take my chances on it.
If the car is parked in NYC, I'm almost guaranteed a ticket by a meter maid. Not a concern of mine because I never take my nice cars to the city.

Similar to most of you I refuse to drill holes on my front bumper so on my BMW M6 and 360 Spider I've never had front plate on.

I was warned 3 times by cops. No tickets.

No front plate tickets here in Seattle is steep - $125.00. I will just pay the fine if i do get a ticket.

I think the sticker will get you in more trouble than operation without a plate. You are copying an official state form of ID and therefore will be considered illegal. Just think about it, would they accept a decal copy of your driver's license.

Don't get me wrong good idea but if the copy is already pulling you over for some other infraction this will definitely be an add on charge. You would be better off puting it in the front truck and carrying it with you at all times.

In Calif. the sticker will get you in more trouble than no plate.

I drilled my front bumper, put the plate on and never gave it a second tought.

This law is inane. I live in NC that thankfully doesn't require a front plate. So I cross over into Virginia that does require one and I'm not breaking their law but someone who lives there and doesn't display one -- is. What stupidity. Just what is the use of the plate anyway -- to ID your vehicle??? How many times have you seen a cop in front of you looking in his mirror to ID your car???
