In between shifts... on a Scuderia

Floor it, touch that paddle, and it will PUNCH you in between the shoulder blades. It is violent and I love it!

 

The violent slamming into the next gear under WOT is one of the things people like most about the scud. I can't help wonder though, isn't this hard on the transmission?

 

Totally fine - it is operating as designed. It's a single clutch setup and it is trying to hit a 60ms shift time.

 

Okay, but the car is also designed to do launch control starts that destroy the clutch. It seems hard to believe that the 60 ms shifts do not cause greater wear than the slower ones.

 

I haven't ever heard of transmission problems on a scud since I have been a member here on this board... There are several people who own these cars who already have 30k miles on them, track their cars and there are also the FDE cars and never. Heard a single issue re the trans

 

Believe me, it's safer for the transmission than the way many people shift with a clutch pedal!

 

Like any car, the faster the clutch engages, the less wear. In launch control mode the car is intentionally slipping the clutch to avoid wheelspin providing a quicker launch.

It's the slipping of a clutch that wears it down. However, you are correct that forceful shifts and hard launches are harder on the rest of the drivetrain components, but it's hard to say just how much.

I have only owned manual cars, each with their quirks. The later model S2000 for example, has a "CDV" - clutch delay valve - that forces the clutch to slip vs sending the immediate shock to the rear end on hard launches/shifts. The result? Faster wear on the clutch but saves the rear end (which is fragile in the S).

Regardless, something mechanical is taking the brunt of a 60ms shift. Whether or not it's "good" for the car is arguable.

 

I thought the launch control was severely limited to some tiny number before it locks out?

Quick engagement is less wear on the clutch, not slower engagement.

Are you arguing the shock is greater? Sure - but it is designed to handle it.

Sure it may wear the clutch a little, but why own a Scud if you're not going to enjoy it? The way I look at it, when it comes time to replace my clutch (or if I ever need to) I will consider it the cost of having an amazing car that gives me an incredible rush when driven. End of story.

If you are so concerned about the clutch/tranny, get a 458 with a double clutch tranny and call it a day (but it is such a dull experience compared to the hit of the Scud shift IMO).

 

Darth- The F1 system lifts the throttle for you on upshifts, just like it increases the throttle for downshifts. So quick you cannot even feel it, especially at 8500 rpm.

 

Ohhhh yes the shifts are very brutal and unique to this car... I don't think Ferrari will ever do another single clutch ever again and not one as brutal as this one for that matter. Unique experience! I feel lucky to have one!!!!

 

They did it on the 599 GTO, the last Ferrari with dry plates clutch and 60 ms shifting.

 

Variable throttle on the Scud may only confuse the firmware; it knows what it's doing - go full throttle while you manage the shift points, but let it manage the shift transitions.

A full throttle shift on the Scud is a visceral experience not to be missed!

The Challenge Stradale exhaust note and the 430 Scuderia F1 transmission together would have been sublime.
