Should the Auto and PS buttons be moved to the wheel

How often do you use them ??? For me they could be positioned somewhere in the trunk...

 

+458. Haven't used LC once in my Cali or 458. Regarding Auto, I typically drive in Auto for the first 5 minutes of my work commute and once the engine oil temp needle has ticked up I just downshift with the paddles to engage Manual.

 

The wheel has enough stuff on it! Im not complaining. It works well once you get used to it but there simply is no more room and the thoughts were to put things on that drivers use while actaully driving. PS/auto is selected prior to driving and PS cant even be selected unless the car is stopped.

 

I'm OK with where they are.

 

PS is definitely better remotely positioned as it is rarely used. There is an argument for the auto button to be on the wheel since some driving situations can call for quick changes -- perhaps more often than the light flash button is used, and that is on the wheel.

 

I heard of a story of an fcar owner that mistakenly pushed the PS instead of the R button and crashed in a wall... not sure if accurate or possible lol..

 

IMHO, Mattetino should have the auto selection. No need for rain mode. (who drives their Ferrari in the rain? LOL) - launch control (PS) should be built into the paddles - example - after full stop, select first, then hold left paddle until PS comes up display - accelerate with foot on brake and release paddle. (for the record, I never used PS in my 458 so I don't even know how it works) Reverse should also be a paddle initiated routine. Just one step back from 1st after selecting neutral. Love the double pull of the paddles for neutral BTW, Lamborghini does same, every manufacturer should do it. The high beam flash should be reversed as well (a pull should do it, not a push)

Other changes:

Rear wheel controls for audio are great but need to be placed a bit closer to outside of wheel and reversed - volume should be on right side, not left - and that stupid auto-mute when holding the lower volume setting should be eliminated (try them in a Fiat Abarth or Jeep SRT8 to see what I mean). And audio/infotainment - well, that needs a complete revamp too lengthy to list. Finally, keyless should be standard - who uses keys anymore?

 

I, like many, begin driving in Auto and as engine warms, shift once and it is history. Good to have it out of the way. As for PS, never use it, so why worry. 99% of the time I drive in Sport and when the mood strikes may select Race (but rarely). Love the shock ("bumps") button on the steering wheel as soon as my rear end begins to feel abused. Best

 

Might as well move the open glove box and trunk buttons to the steering wheel as well. Not enough buttons on there

And we could put the window controls and the roof/rear window controls (spider).

Then there is the button to switch mileage readouts (A,B, total miles, miles to empty).

 

Do you think it's odd that the glove box button is not actually on the glove box? Oh well glove box is worthless anyways small items get caught in the back of the left compartment and jam the box from closing and my tortuous iPod connector takes up most of the space.

 

Hmmm I drive in race 99% of time but today it rained on drive home from work and I used wet mode. As a masochist I try stomach normal suspension as long as my skinny butt can tolerate but with the crappy roads around here on my daily commute often have to acquiesce to bumpy road setting

I think there is enough stuff on the steering wheel and like where the auto/launch/R are. You dont want to mistakenly be hitting the Reverse button which could happen if it was on the steering wheel. I agree with the poster that the headlights high beams could be moved off the steering wheel.

On back roads at night I like using highbeams. Frequently I'll come around a corner and see a car and want to revert to low beams. Having a button on a steering wheel makes it difficult to find if you are not on a straight-away. Personally I feel this is a real design flaw-- forcing the driver to look down at the wheel while in a turn at night is not an improvement. I prefer the traditional method of a lever on the side of the steering column--always in the same place regardless of whether the steering wheel is turned or not.

 

I think it would be great to move the auto button to the wheel, quite happy to replace the 'source' button on the back of the wheel, never use that one!. Don't really see Reverse & launch are needed on the wheel, but yes sometimes if driving in auto mode and you want a quick blast to overtake, then it would be handier to go to manual without having to reach down to the centre console, and to be honest the kickdown in auto mode is not very good at all, much better to switch to manual for such manouvers. Currently an FF driver, so it would be particularly useful on that, as quite often I have kids & wife in the car, and doing longer journeys in auto, and as its the same wheel setup across the range it would apply also.
Think its a good idea, seems odd its being treated with such ridicule in this thread to be honest, one auto on/off button to hand on the wheel would be good, yes I am sure many of the 'only drive in race mode manual oh and I don't need a radio cos I listen to the noise of the engine' brigade think its daft, but for the rest of us that drive many different distances in varying traffic on varying roads it would be good

 

Why not just pull left paddle to downshift and engage manual when overtaking a car?

 

Because I don't like it to swap back to auto when it decides too, I would like to control it

 

Don't get your point...
If you start the car the gearbox is in "sports automatic" mode and the triangle is displayed along with the gear selected (sorry, I don't recall what they call it exactly...). If you touch the paddles it goes to manual and stays there.
If you use the Auto-button it will be in Auto-mode and revert to auto after having used the paddles. Auto is displayed in gear-indication. If you never touch that button you will never have mode reversion back to auto.

 

Hahaha god that would be bad, but you need to hold the break pedal and get the revs up, so if he didn't notice that there are bigger issues at hand than crashing in a wall

 

That makes no sense. It stays engaged in manual mode once you downshift with the paddle after starting in auto.

I never knew that about the downshift, I thought like my other cars, pulling a paddle in auto mode momentarily moved it to manual , and then it would go back to auto few mins later.
I tend to have always reached for the auto button to switch between the two....silly me, well then no need for a button on the wheel if the paddle pull changes it to manual, job done

 

Glad to help! I rarely go from manual back to auto as I drive in manual and race 99% of time! For me it's how long my skinny butt can take it before switching to bumpy road suspension.

 

I switch to manual when I start the car.*

Reason: It is pretty steep downhill out of our driveway all the way to the main road. Auto upshifts and the car goes too fast.

A friend likes to drive his Italia in Auto mode until the car warms up. Then manual. This is not an option for me.

I tried driving in Auto once. It was not fun.

*For variety sometimes I push the Auto button and then the Reverse button. Other times I push the Reverse button and THEN the auto button.
