Has anyone made a serious attempt to document the LP400 cars that were converted or partially converted to LP400S specification? Some conversions were done by the factory while others were done by Lamborghini dealers (e.g, Hubert Hahne) or specialty shops (mostly) in Europe.

Some cars were brought up to LP400S standards in all ways (including suspension, wheels, front spoiler, flares, etc., etc.). Others were done only to the extent that they "looked" like the more modern LP400S.

The world clamored for the new model for several reasons. The LP400 was stunning but lacked good braking, had narrow tires mounted on 14 in rims, and a wide variety of other issues. The new LP400S had state of the art dual parallel link suspension, 15 inch wheels, new P7 Pirelli low profile tires, much better brakes, new hub carriers and bearings, new steering rack, etc. etc.

Getting a new LP400S and trading in an LP400 was essentially out of the question no matter how much money one had. Thus, there was the urge to turn the LP400 into the newer, more desired, LP400S.

I happened to speak to Trefor Thomas some years ago when this issue came up. I do not recall his estimate of the number of these conversions but is was far more than "just a few." I think this matter was addressed in one of the early Lamborghini Club newsletters but I have not tried to dig it out.

Anyway, I think readers on this web site would be interested in this matter. What do we know about these converted cars? How often is a car sold where neither the buyer or seller knows that that car has been converted or partially converted? We think there were about 50 LP400S cars sold; are some of these converted cars? There are many interesting questions here but I have never seen more than a brief mention of the issue. These converted cars must be showing up occasionally at high-end restoration shops -- this must be a source of information.

this is an interesting topic. I imagine that you are correct and conversions did occur. I would also imagine that based on the fairly recent rise to super stardom of the lp-400, that there is in fact a chance that cars previously converted have made the journey back to original.

look forward to the experts to weigh in.

Is it, or is it not original if the factory did the conversion ?

Imagine the factory LP400 which was modified to the S and later re-converted to the LP 400.

It is whatever you want it to be.

David, this topic has been discussed, reviewed, debated, analyzed, ad nauseum. In fact, within this thread http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/lamborghinichat-com-sponsored-lamborghini-houston/163765-countach-ultimate-supercar.html, you'll find much of the aforementioned. To cut to the chase, the received wisdom from period parties (including Trefor) is that the factory themselves turned about 2 dozen LP400 into LP4000S.
