So...this 308 I have in was stuck in first gear. Moving the lever felt as if there was no connection fore-aft, side to side was being held by the gate. I removed the gate and suddenly I now have positive selection of 2-5, but there is no existence of 1st or Rev to be found, regardless where I move the lever.

At this stage it seems apparent I am going to have to remove the lower portion of the transmission to access view of the dogbones. I was wondering if anyone can visualize what may be happening here to give me a lead-in of what I am potentially looking at, as a failure.

Thanks for any info that can be provided...manual, threads, pics, info. I've done a quite of bit of searching but haven't been able to find an identical issue....so figure I have to go in.

I don't have pictures but the shift alignment isn't too frightening if one has patience. With a search there may even be posts that do have some pictures.

Any road, I have attached a document I created for the procedure that worked with my car. Good luck.

Drain the tranny oil, open the bottom, and it will be extremely obvious. Trust me.

You are probably overshooting the R-1 selector. Try finding 1st as close as possible to 3rd. Really close.

OR- is the car stuck in gear? Did you leave the transmission in 1st or reverse when you took the gate off the shifter?

Yes, taking the pan off helps 100X.

Is the gate installed now while you are doing this? If so, remove it again and try rotating it 180 degrees when you re-install it :) It has a specific orientation....otherwise shifter movement is partially blocked.

Two things to look at before draining anything.

The locknuts on the shift shaft adjustment turnbuckle, it might have moved a bit so you can't make 1st and reverse.

The shift shaft silentbloc bushings might be worn out as well.

The car got stuck in 1st while driving. I pulled out and suddenly the shifter just felt like it was disconnected...wouldnt come out of first, would only go forward. Ended up flatbedding to my shop. Once I took the gate off the tranny was able to release into neutral. From that point I could positively locate 2-5th with no gate installed.

Something definitely "let go". It had so sign of a shifting issue whatsoever then bam...stuck in first with a shifter that felt dislocated from the tranny. Can see the shift rod under the console moving fine so...the problem is at the tranny...just figured I am gonna be dropping the pans. I assumed it'd be obvious there was a misalignment issue, but what led to it becoming misaligned? Guess taking it apart will show me.

This happen to me before, no reverse, the lever will go in to the reverse slot on the gate but the car will move forward when tried to engage the clutch. What I found out was that the nut holding the bolt that goes through the silent block has fallen off and the bolt is barely inserted into the silent block. So, I just simply pushed the bolt back in and installed a new nylon lock nut with washer and now I could shift to all gears. I suggest to check all external linkages before removing the pan off.

Happened to me. One of the shift bushings was falling apart. If that's your case, do both while your in there. (ask me how I know)

I had to put this car aside for a minute to deal with a few others. I'm about to have this one back on the lift. The issue definitely seems as you describe Mike. I'll update in a bit when I see what's happening.

Thanks for the help thus far guys...if I can avoid dropping the bottom of the tranny that'd definitely save me some time.
