I bought my first Ferrari a few days ago, a F430 Spider, and it sounded sublime for the days I spent with it before I bought it.

Yesterday and today however, I have noticed a more "blowy" sound coming from the exhaust, especially at rev's below say 3,500.

It has gotten colder over the last few days, and it might be me paying way more attention to little noises now its actually mine... But I am pretty sure that it does sound slightly different.

Just worried it might be a sign of some issue or problem?

Does anyone have any ideas or can put my mind at rest?

    And, second question..

Whats the recommended way to warm up and get your car ready for driving? I like to drive it and experience the speed and rev's etc.. so I want to make sure its warmed up and ready before I take it out.. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Josh.

Well done on the new car, and a Kiwi at that. A 430 would be a dream to own.
Have you joined the F club? They have lots of events.

Just treat your car for what it is, a car. Most will tell you just to start it and drive it.
Just don't hammer it until it gets warm.

Like a Ducati, these cars make all sorts of weird and wonderful noises, but as time goes by they are all normal. If it was a problem it would throw a CEL.

Most people crap themselves at the slightest noise when we first buy a Ferrari, but as I was told when I bought mine, "This car is not a ballerina, it is more Mike Tyson"
    They are tough.

Enjoy it and I hope to meet you sometime at an event.
There is a track day late May at Pukekohe. Take it along and see what she can really do :)

430's are known for header cracks. Don't know what you mean by a blowing sound, but if it were mine I would at least have someone familiar with the 430 to give me an answer after evaluation of the sound. Replacement of a header far less expensive than an engine.

Thanks for the comments guys.. It could be me being over analytical.. But took it out today again for a short while to check and it definitely sounds more blowy and the wine sound at higher rev's seems to sometimes cut out to a blowy sound and then come back in.

As with anything like this, without a video, its hard to explain.

Where would I start if I wanted to check for signs of any issues? Or is there anything relatively simple to test?

    Thanks!

(What are the signs for a header needing replacement?)

I don't know the law in your country but in some countries if you buy through a professional and something comes up within a certain period they are responsible for it. So this might be worth a check.
If that doesn't work, either take the car to the nearest dealer ( they will be able to diagnose the car and fix it if need be) or call the ferrari club and ask if there is an independent ferrari specialist near you and have the car checked. I'm not sure if you have a pre purchase inspection done prior to buying your 430 but if you have not, a full check would be good.

    Best.

Are you sure that sound is not coming from the passenger seat? Sorry I could not resist the temptation to make that comment. In my case I have noticed a lot less at any RPM.

Josh there are many posts on Ferrarichat regarding pre cat failure and header cracks. Remember that an engine is simply a pump (air in air out). Pre cat failure can be disastrous as it draws in metal etc. into the combustion chamber. You might ask Fabspeed who is a Sponsor and sells both Cat replacement, Headers etc for some direction in your sound problem. Surely you have a Ferrari owners club with some knowledgeable people and definitely Ferrari repair shops. I would certainly not rely however on what someone thinks without actually seeing the car as your short Ferrari ownership may result in a disaster!

Thanks everyone for your comments and consideration.

I will take a video with a camera mounted to the back of the car tomorrow and post it up here in hopes that perhaps it might help.

Docf, you are right, I definitely want to make sure someone looks over it in person as well.

Unfortunately, there are no Ferrari dealerships or clubs in my city, so it looks like a trip away needs to be planned!

This very well could be my inexperience with what a "healthy" sound is like on the F430! (And it could be me over analysing my new pride and joy too) But, I absolutely want to try and make sure, and be safe rather than sorry!

    Thanks again all.
