Bonhams revised their buyer's commission rate for automobiles, it is a flat 10%. Seller's commissions as with every auction house are negotiable.

I was thinking of having Algar do some work on my Ghibli. How would you rate their service and are they fairly priced?

    Seriously,

Their service is excellent, Mike the service manager provides great communication & great technicians. Their pricing is very fair given their excellent reputation and state of the art workshop. They made me a deal to completely sort out my Bora that was nicely discounted from retail.

    Sounds good Art,
I will get in touch if we venture north. Good to get the few stateside Bora's together.

    All the best,

I just noticed this photo of your RH header, the starter and the starter cable.

While it was there did they put a heat shield back in to protect the starter?

A couple of suggestions besides that.

If you ever drive the card hard those headers can get quite hot and things affected on the RH side are the aforementioned starter but also that starter cable, parking brake cables and the fuel pumps(s).

I replaced the simple rubber sleeve of the starter cable with a piece of silicone heater hose.

I covered the parking brake cables with the same because mine got hot enough that the internal liner which is nylon melted and the cable froze in place.

These are both relatively easy to do.

I replaced and enlarged the starter shield with one made out of double walled SS.

    No so easy.

I also added one for the fuel pumps to protect them from the radiant heat of the headers. Vapour lock on warm spring days with winter gas can be an issue even with the constant dribble return of the fuel rail.

That's the reason for a better heat shield for the gas tank as well. Also not so easy.

I really drove my car in hot weather.

Thanks for the tips, I doubt they installed any additional heat shields. Unfortunately, the car is now back up there as the clutch pedal lost pressure due to a cracked hydraulic line. They say they are sourcing the parts, any help on this one?

    The clutch is NOT LHM.
The reservoir is in a very PITA location under the cowl on the LH side. Access, if you can call it that is from the front trunk.

Everything in that circuit is garden variety hydraulic circuit just like any other car. Maybe that's what's leaking as the line runs along the RH valve cover nuts and then down to the slave cylinder which operates the fork into the bell housing. There's a flex line from the front of the valve cover over to the hard line on the firewall. Just where photo shows the leak!

You can make any of these parts locally at a hydraulic hose shop. Slave and master cylinders are readily available. I used silicone fluid in this circuit.

Make sure the heat shield for the starter is put back in at least. You may need to fabricate one if it's missing. VERY IMPORTANT. Originally all these shields were backed with asbestos riveted to the shield. Obviously you need to use a modern material instead. I bet your shift linkage heat shield under the LH header along side the block still has all of that on it.

I hope that shield isn't missing too? ALSO VERY IMPORTANT.

Of course there are plenty of other potential LHM sources for a leak in that area as well. The original factory style LMH hose that goes from the pump to the bulkhead fitting in front of it on that crossmember is prone to weeping. I had that and all my brake hoses fabricated out of the teflon line SS braided hose back in the 1980s. Problems solved.

Given the age of the car and not knowing what's been replaced in these circuits any of the hoses are suspect now. There's also the connections for the seat and pedals pistons too. It's been discussed several time on here so search for it. Carpet soaked in LHM is not particular fun. In my Espada it's just brake fluid (equally messy) instead so it's not all about LHM. It's more about where they put the mechanicals in sleek and space tight automobile designs. These aren't GM trucks ... ;)

There's also the recirculating circuits shutoff valve ... etc.

A piece of paper towel makes for a great leak detector early on.

    As Bob pointed out it's safe to say this is not an LHM leak then. There are only 3 significant components to the hydraulic clutch;
    1. Master cylinder is an off-the-shelf Girling unit near the wiper motor (you can get one overnighted from Pegasus Racing or MIE).
    2. Flexible line from chassis to engine/tranny assembly (from MIE).
    3. Slave cylinder at the clutch housing (from MIE).
The remaining components are rigid steel lines with standard fittings which a mechanic can check but are not as likely to fail as the above three suspects. Depending on the condition of the parts you see, or if the car has sat for a long time, you might as well replace all three components while you are in there.
    Best wishes,
    - Art

    Hi Ivan,

My name is Gary Siemion a previous owner to evidently your new car 1044 Bora. I googled my name and up came this thread. If you want more and accurate (certainly not found with others' renditions found in this thread) info around my tenure with that car get a hold of me. I think I may still have some papers on that car. It was a great ride and I did a lot of work to that unit back then.

    Hi Ivan,
My name is Gary Siemion. Get a hold of me if you want factual info around my tenure with that car. Do not rely on gossip and story embelishment for individuals own gain on this or any other social chatty Cathy site. It was a great car. I did a lot of work to it back then to get it to exemploray status that would carry through the future. I'm gratified to see it in such great shape.
The renditions of my imbibement long ago are unfortunately somewhat true. However, not to the degree that I am reading. What is/was also true is my expert prowise mechanically and my racing history and associated car control expertise. Of course, that doesn't seem as spectacular, disparaging and available to build one's own fragile ego. Oh well, I'm here for you.
I find it sad that those who attempt to remember my association with 1044 do so to attempt to embelish their own status with a particular present community.
Oh also, I am not the one who attached that plaque to the center console!
    Good Luck Ivan,
    Gary Siemion

OK Gary what did some of us get wrong? I only remember great things about the car and yourself at the time. Those were fun times.
