On my recent sojourn to Royal Ascot from Largs approx. 450 miles I have checked the mpg and I am very impressed. I bought 27 gallons of fuel on the return trip so 450 miles (and that excludes going back the wrong way for another 20 miles or so by mistake!) Most of the journey was on motorway doing 70mph but sometimes it appeared I was always doing between 80 and 90 with bursts up to 120mph of course these speeds were only what it felt like I was actually never over 70mph! If you get my drift. Anycase 16.5 to 17mpg was the average. I think that is very good indeed for a massive carburetted engine nearly 40 years old. Regards Alastair Image Unavailable, Please Login
27 imperial gallons, right? If so, that would be about 32 U.S. gallons and 14 mpg in U.S. terms. Not bad as it sounds as though you were not trying to be light footed on the throttle! 32 gallons is just a little bit more than a full tank, so I would be curious as to what your fuel cost for that is. Don't worry, I'm sitting down and taking deep breaths as I wait for the answer. BTW, premium fuel in this part of the U.S. now is about $4.60/gallon, so that would cost $147 for a fillup.

Alastair : That would be 1.68 Liter/10km in my part of the world. Last time I checked mine was approx. 2.0 Liter/10 km and that would correspond nicely to the figures in the handbook. Looks like I have a long way to go with carb and ignition tuning... For the record I bleed £193 or $325 for a full tank 98RON
Hello Alastair, The performance of your 400GT matches that of my 365GT4 2+2 which has done consistently 16.5 liters/100km (close to 17mpg) during long trips last year: Lyon-Paris-Silverstone Classic-Lyon, then Lyon-Maranello-Lyon via Montpellier, this is going at maximum allowed speed on the motorways (80 mph). At some point in time I thought the carburation was on the lean side, I requested the mechanics to enrich the mixture, but they told me that the mixture was OK like this (they were right). This just says how good this engine is.
On a recent long distance road trip I averaged 24.8 mpg for 620 miles. Highway speeds of 55 to 80 miles per hour - mostly around 70. Normal around town mileage is 18.4 mpg. I know its not a V12 but it is a very fast car with 300hp. US gallons.
