That has thrown me too! (Okiedude, your avatar is same as Dave Helms.) Newman, love watching this project come together. Its been a long road, fun as heck to watch, learn, drool.
Plating came back so I focused on the suspension. The rear uprights I chose to plate the debris rings, they come painted black most likely on the uprights when they are painted but the paint flakes off and the rings rust. They can't be seen so why not? Because the cast components that are painted are done so prior to final machining all machined surfaces are bare. I didn't clean off the rim around the outer bearing because its hidden, same goes for the area under the park brake anchor bracket but everything else thats visible is correct. Shocks are rebushed, new decals, painted springs and Ill add the red paint markings to the rear springs. Interestingly I have another 79 here that has red paint marks on the front coils whereas this black 78 only had them on the rears. The flash does make the plated parts look garish, especially the gold but not in person. Some pics of the silver were taken without a flash to give a better idea (first pic is without a flash). I need to assemble the calipers next, rims will be ready shortly with new XWX's waiting. Backing plates are a green/blue color that we had to develop on the fly with no code for it unfortunately. Some come black others are this color so I kept it as it was. Jeez man, once you're done, no one will want to drive it! It'll look too good to drive! Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk
Fabulous looking! Those bushings must really get a workout without a medal cross section between the arms like found on the 308 suspension.
Suspension and brakes just about finished. Pads and hard lines connecting to flex lines is next. New XWX's will go on the refinished rims tomorrow and on they go. Ill be running the engine tomorrow or friday. Love how the rims turned out (wish I was personally responsible!) especially the crisp lettering, none better in my opinion. Cant wait to have mine done on my own 79 BB. Yellow inspection marks on fasteners and red paint on springs shortly. Thanks! The body shop I use does all of my wheels. I would have to ask but ferrari 101 is the OEM code. The rims are base clear with a flattener
Rear clamshell was full of dents along the rear face which is typical. All it takes is a person pushing on the rear face with the palms of their hands and the damage is done. We corrected the dents, added color and cleared most of the rear clamshell to make the repair invisible. Black boxer trim looks awesome on a black car. Love the rear suspension Ferrari came up with, could they have done it any better? The white sport headers with all that mechanical goodness going on in the rear blows me away every time. You are doing some fantastic work on these cars........Thanks for taking the time to post the nice pictures, you make me want to own a boxer some day. Best regards Peter
Thanks guys! I set my Koenig stacks on the engine just to see how much they would stick out at 3.5" tall. There are aftermarket stacks available in 4" and 6" that would really stick out can-am style. I may just do that to mine and run it without the snorkels from time to time. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
He-heh-heheh... btw. For all those thinking something similar; Remember that airfilter is not that esential for casual driving, if you live dust free envirment but remember that one most important job for airbox over carburetor is to keep posible flame away from rest of the car, as carburators can spit out fuel, if something unordinarry hapens.
I drive my koenig 512 BB since now 9 years without airbox of course and without airfilter. only trumpets like paul have them on now and there never happened something. when cold sometimes the carbs are missfiring, but that does not matter because the engine still is cold.
