Mark and a few others who post on F-Chat have serious resentment issues. Underneath (or sometimes right on top) of every post they make is a very real distaste for anyone who doesn't share their very own ignorant allegiance. Best to put on ignore and move on. Interesting thing is that those words describe him perfectly, only thing missing is "very" in front of each one of them.

 

Re; the weight. To me it appears like the goal was 3,000 lbs or less. Do whatever it takes to get there. For Mclaren it was probably the same; design the car to a target weight. I think the F1 was created the same way.....probably others that I'm not aware of, or care about....

So having read both reviews:

P1 is a glorified 12C with 12C engine
LF is a glorified 458 with F12 engine

Until we see them side by side in an independent tests, the cars sound exactly the same except looks and exhaust. P1 wins in looks, LF in sound imo.

No point arguing anything else since there is no objective data available for either at this point.

 

I've been watching F1 for a long time I really never understood how important COG is, and even less so for road cars. Ferrari seem very proud at what they've managed to achieve in regards to that with the LaF

 

A car slows down under breaking because the road exerts a rearward force on the tires ... at the road/tire interface, of course if the center-of-gravity of the vehicle is above the road surface (as they all must be), then that breaking force not only slows the car, but also exerts a rotational torque on the vehicle's center-of-gravity. That's the sole reason why all cars tend to nose-dive under breaking. The same physics apply to cornering forces (i.e. lateral acceleration) too, of course

Lower center-of-gravity means less rotational torque from these road/tire forces.

At the end of the day, it's not just vehicle weight that matters ... but also how that weight is distributed. Ferrari is very wise indeed to not only be fanatical about low weight, but also about a low center-of-gravity as well.

For stable, predictable cornering, they need to also think about the polar moments of inertial...which means they try to concentrate the mass in the center of the vehicle, rather than have it spread out.

 

agreed ... vertical distribution of mass is certainly not the only concern.

except said glorified 458 has unique and seriously high end carbon chassis. and what exactly sounds the same? all three amazing hypercars are in my fantasy garage, but LaF>918>P1, with acknowledging 918 built for entirely different goals, purpose, and appropriately is the most complex, and techy.

 

A P1 to me a Mclaren...like the Laferrari to me a Ferrari....I don't see them as updeaged 12c/458 cars !!!

I'm a car enthusiast i care about the car character and driving experience, I enjoy driving anything and I mean anything and respect people choisses and actually feels happy for them.

Finger crossed I will get my Laferrari early/med next year and can really feel what each car deliver and I'm sure both will win my vote.

until then the P1 will get my full attention and will always do...such a ballastic experience.

Who cares how unique and high-end it is? I can make anything unique and high-end. Doesn't necessarily make it superior or different.

Eating cereal with a CF spoon feels like eating cereal with any plastic spoon.

I'm just repeating what both reviews seem to say. The cars seem to drive just like the predecessors, but way faster and with higher limits. This is pretty much expected when you consider cars these days are driving themselves. You steer and control to pedals. The rest is all done with computers very similar to the ones you have in all the other models. Sure, you stiffen it up and add some power/response, but it's very easy to see why both cars would feel very similar to their juniors when you consider all the computers at work.

The interior and seating position has probably far more of an impact on experience than something like the tub composition. I'll probably never driver the LF nor the P1, but I'm pretty sure neither will feel very different from a 458/12C in the vast majority of usage. I live in the real world, not on a race track.

It's just the nature of where car technology is at these days. It's plateauing and only adding power is going to be making the majority of different.

Anyway, don't see anything wrong with sharing components from other models, as long as the final product is good and unique enough. Something that a lot of Ferrari fans have criticised P1 for, even though the same thing could be said about LaFerrari.

 

The centre of gravity is ~15 inches on the 918. Any idea about LaFerrari's?

 

Eh, whatever. I'd buy a P1 because of how it looks, not because of what it does at a level I can't drive it. Same with the LF.

I have a 12C currently and it's borderline too quick/fast for the street. Having 900hp is cool and all, but when you can't touch the throttle and the road is full of pot holes, what's the point?

 

who cares? people that pay 1.5 million for the car care. and you think the material that the tub is constructed of has no influence on how the seats are placed? that the tub only weighs 75 kilo's is not 'superior'? does it not contribute to the performance of the car? it is unique and it is superior to tubs of competing cars..in technical terms, it can be measured. in vast majority of usage there will ALWAYS be that electric (literally) response from the monster V12, and its noise. there will ALWAYS be that agility over 458 even at 30mph. you don't need a racetrack to enjoy the obvious differences. it's immediately different the moment it catches your eye, the moment you get in...

 

Here is an interesting question:

How would an LF and P1 feel if they only had 650hp? When you remove the grunt, how do we think they'd feel? Vastly different to the 458/12C? I'm thinking not so much.

Super cool cars that I'd love to have and I'd love to be proven wrong by driving them, but I've driven my share of cars over the years to know that the biggest difference in the real world is usually comfort, looks, and straight line speed.

I've come to terms with the diminishing returns of performance these days. I'm only 28 and unfortunately arrived a bit late to the super car party. I don't think the gains these days are what they used to be.
