We are planning on moving to Florida at the end of the year. We are checking out both coasts for a place to live. We will be visiting during the month of June. We (my girlfriend and I) are both avid scuba divers which is one of the reasons we are moving back to Florida. We are already familiar with the Tampa Bay and Sarasota areas but are looking for other options. We have family on both coasts.

We would like to meet some local F-chatters who can tell us some pros/cons of the areas. We are members of the Houston Chapter of FCA.

We are looking at homes that are not associated with a Homeowner's Association and need enough space to park our 4 cars (inside a garage) and a workshop. We don't have any school-aged children so that is not an issue. We will be paying cash and would like to keep the cost to under 300k.

Any suggestions, help, ideas, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

As a former diver, native Floridian and fellow F-guy, I'd vote heartily for the east side. From the Treasure Coast (Ft. Pierce) to WPB, the waters are good and you'll find more variety, from reefs to wrecks than you will on the west side. The east side also has another big plus: it's about an hour's boat ride from the Bahamas. And Andros Island is not awfully far away.

There's also great diving in the Keys - easy access from the east coast. But I don't think you will come close to finding a house in Broward or Dade counties with that kind of garage space for 300k. Prices have shot up tremendously in the last two years. Good luck.

    Welcome to the looney bin!

I don't know about the west coast but you aren't going to find that type of house/garage situation anywhere south of Jupiter for that price. MAYBE up in Palm City and north. If you do fins a house like that in south Florida let me know so I can buy it before you do! ;) I've been looking for the same type of setup and haven't found anything under 500k.

Bets of luck and welcome aboard.

I live on Sanibel Island outside if Ft Myers.
Just across the causeway is the Iona area of southern Ft Myers.
You can get what you want there. Older homes with big yards and room for toys.
You will need to check on flood insurance for these older homes that are built on ground level.
Unless you pay cash and just assume the risk yourself. These places did not flood during Hurricane Charley. Zip code is 33908.
My trainer lives across this house below. 10 minutes to the beach on Sanibel and 5 minutes to boat ramp, marina, etc on the bay.

Any house with a big lot and no HOA rules will be older. All newer houses are on 1/3 acre or less

My condolences. I used to live there in 1976, but fortunately we moved to Miami in 1977...
The rules for a kid to ride a bicycle on the island were onerous even back then when hippies ruled the world.

No particular rules now. I ride all the time.
23 miles of bike path, separate from the road.
So maybe that is something that has chAnged for the better.

Dont bother if you scuba dive with the west coast. Go East Young Man ! Look at Fort Lauderdale

I was just joking around, but the rules were serious then. Apparently some Q-tips from up north ran over a few bicyclists back then . so the obvious solution is to make every kids' bike look horrible with a 8 foot tall goofy orange flag, and a bell on the handlebars. UGH!

My mom sold her house off Periwinkle Way on some shell rock road for like $350k-ish maybe 8-10 years ago. I remember she bought it new in 1976 for $17k!

From Ft Myers, you can take the fast boat to Key West, called the key west express, if you want the best diving.
The near shore waters here are mostly murky, and in the summer it is not dive able.
There are some wrecks 10-20 miles out that have decent visibility. Bit the best water is in the keys.

And that house would be 500 or more today. There is a 2/2 old little house on my street for 500k.

My family bought an oceanfront lot in Maine in 1951 for 3,000 dollars, directly on the beach. That was the time to buy, apparently! I had yet to be born, however.

    Regards,
    Scott

Drive Rt A1A from Ft Lauderdale up to Jupiter and pick a place. From my experience East coast better car events, younger crowd, and easier less expensive access by air (3 airports to choose FLL. PBI, MIA). Plus Cavallino!!
