Would you prefer a Turbo or NA engine on the 458 Successor?

Please give me a price range and I will reply. If money were no object, I would get myself an F12 or a Speciale. One tier lower I would get a GT3. One lower again and it would be a Cayman GTS. Another one and it would be a Toyota GT86 / Subaru BRZ.

 

good choice but next generation of speciale will be turbo, boxster and cayman will be 4 cylinder turbo in the future

 

A local tuner, I already bought the car with this exhaust.
I like the McLaren's sound.
Just a different one compared to a Ferrari's NA V8!

I have owned (and own presently) turbos and they do very well at altitude.

the 458 has so much hp you don't need a turbo. you lose about 10% here and what's left is more than plenty IMVHO. Thus, I prefer NA.

I own two twin turbo cars. My Bentley sounds like a "real" car, i.e. normally aspirated, while my Porsche even with exhaust modifications, still sounds like a sewing maching (admittadly now on steroids). How did Bentley do it? My problem besides (perceptible) turbo lag experienced with ever turbo I have driven is the lack of sound. I could live with a turbo although like my supercharged cars better, if I could "hear it". Best

 

Heard the California T at a recent launch event at the dealer. It sounds pretty ok, but definitely not as melodious as the old V8. It actually shared some characteristics with the sound from the new BMW M4 that I heard in person. Both sounded good, but could be improved further.

 

After Ferrari's performance in F1 this year, definitely NA, but if I want a Turbo I guess it's Mercedes.

 

If Ferrari has to use a turbocharged engine for the 458 successor, the best for them is to offer another model with NA engine. Same like what they are doing in Maserati now, customers can choose turbocharged or NA engine.
In my opinion, for super cars and hyper cars, NA engine is a must. Turbo or supercharger is a cheap solution to gain horse power, and makes the car sounds like a vacuum cleaner. As for the emission, these super and hyper cars are just small numbers, and not driven every day, so won't make any difference. When people spend that much money for a car, they need 2 things : The Look and The Sound. Just look at the 2014 F1's sound compared to 2013's.
And if 458 successor is using a turbocharged engine, I will stick to 458.

 

I share your viewpoint with the exception of the supercharger. I presently own two cars with superchargers, two with turbo's, a 458, etc. The turbo cars are very different from one another and I don't know why, but the supercharged cars have the melodious roar of a NA, because, except for the bolted /pully driven superhcarger, they are. I do understand the "purist" point of view regarding "don't touch it". Best

 

Pic of a twin supercharged 599 GTB pumping out 850 HP!. The sound makes the hair on your arms stand on end.....incredible. Definitely not a vacuum cleaner....

in supercharged cars you don't have turbo on exhaust, turbo install in exhaust system killing the sound that's why supercharged cars sounds better like jaguar F type

 

A 458 with a 570 hp high-revving N/A engine is for sure a cheaper solution then a M458 turbo with a 670 hp high-revving engine including an advanced twin-turbo system.

And please, do not judge before you have heard the sound.

Power and performance isn't longer important in a sports car? So much money just for a show car? The world was really better in the past...

 

Maserati offers NA engine only because they still produce old model called granturismo, succesor of grandturismo will be turbo, in the future all Maserati cars will be turbo,
Ferrari will not build car with naturally aspirated V8 because then most customers would not want to buy V8 turbo even if this car would be a little faster

 

Given regulations, I don't think either car fans or Ferrari have a choice.

Meh. I drove Ghibli SQ4 loaner daily for a week while my Spider was at the autoshow. Exhaust note was like dilute Kool-aid compared to the 458.

 

SQ4 is a V6. Only the QP GTS is a V8.

I visited the dealer today, to arrange the last details before to get at home my Speciale.
They confirmed at 100% that the next 458 successor will be turbo. I am very glad to get the last NA V8 made by Ferrari. To me, it sounded just as a good new by now, but for my next future (I will buy only Speciale/Scuderia versions in the future) this sounds disappointing..
We will see.

Ferrari will combine high revs with bi-turbo boost.

It won't be as high revving as the current V8, nor will it have the same kind of power delivery and sound. The reviewers were slighty disappointed by the new turbocharged M4. Hopefully that won't happen with Ferrari...
