1981 400i

Just wondered if these came with a nardi steering wheel option or was it after market ?

 

Aftermarket. The cars came with a Momo.

I wonder if someone here could elaborate on the Momo/Nardi steering wheels, to which years/models, each were applied, and when and why a change was made from one to the other.

My 82 308 came with a Nardi from the factory. So then is 1982 the year the change was made from Momo to Nardi as Ferrari OEM? Didn't the 328's and possibly even later 308's have Momos again?

 

I've got an '81 400i (35477) and it's a leather rimmed Nardi. My '84 512BBi (49805) is a Momo. Hope these dates help.

 

I am curious ,I have 3 400's a 1980/and 2 81's 2 have mono and 1 nardi,my 79 bb has a mono ,the march 81 400 has the nardi fitted

Right....Nardi was not factory. Wasn't factory on the 308 either.

 

Nardi was factory on the 308s in the 80-82 timeframe.

 

Wow, totally busted on the 308 wheels for 80-82. I stand corrected. To my knowledge though, no Nardis on the 400s though.

 

Wrong again Brian ! The brushed aluminum, split-spoke Nardi was OE on the Series 1 injected cars.

 

My Series I, 1982 (#40555) has the Nardi brushed aluminum, black leather wrapped wheel that I was told was original to the car. #40557 also has the exact same Nardi wheel.

 

Every series 1 injected car I've been in has the same Momo.

Gee..as I stated, my Ser. 1 1980 has an anodized aluminum Momo. Maybe the Nardis needed to be switched out so the car could pass federal emissions specs..Heh, heh. Jq.

I must admit, I haven't got a clue how to find out if you have the one or the other.??

Mine is round, leather clad, three spokes with a split along the middle of each, 6 counter sunk screws around the horn button and a signature (can't read) at the bottom of the middle spoke as well as FERRARI stamped closer to the centre.

400i A. Pretty sure it was born with this, but not certain.

On closer look, the signature could maybe be read as "E. Nardi" ??

 

The signature is that of Enrico Nardi and, s I said, the Nardi was OE, but maybe the Momo was too !
After all, we're talking about Ferrari here and there are very few absolutes.
FWIW, the Factory promotional literature we have at the shop shows the Nardi fitted.

 

You know, the more I research this, I am about ready to also concede that some series I 400is got Nardi wheels in 1981 and 1982 too. (Same as the 308).

Sounds something like Ferrari got a good deal on Nardis for a couple of years and then went back to Momo. Seems more 400is I see are 1983 or newer models--or 1979 or older models....so of course all the ones I've been around have Momos.

But there are quite a few pictures out there of 1981 and 1982 400is with the Nardi wheels--again, same as the 308.

Keep in mind these are decidedly different Nardis than the sort of gaudy wood and chrome versions most people think about it. They for all practical purposes look similar to the Momo but with the trademark Nardi split spoke.

Interesting turn of research in my opinion. So to the OP's question, I think it "depends on what type of Nardi"

I've had a look through various books : "Original Ferrari V12", "Ferrari 4 seaters", Ferrarsissima 3, factory brochures and magazines and they all show that the 365 GT4 2+2, 400 and 412 where all supplied with various Momo wheels.

Nardi make a very similar looking wheel to the OE, which is why I think they end up on many Ferraris. ( that and the fact that the Momo OE wheels are no longer available)
