Jeez people give it a rest already. If you don't believe what someone says, fine don't believe it. Do we have to keep harboring over the same points over and over and over and over....

    Having said this, no.
But do we have to suffer the same fanaticism over and over and over and over...

Just thinking how cool of a car a 911 with 918's V8 would be. And at only ~135 kg for the 4.6 V8, even better balanced than with the current Flat 6(~200 kg).

Now, thinking aloud... The current 991 GT3/GT3 RS is now reaching serious rpm for such a large 6 cylinder engine. I wonder if Porsche is considering making a V8 911... If GT3 is to stay naturally aspirated, I don't see a viable alternative.

It would also be interesting to discover if any well heeled client has approached Porsche to remove the hybrid systems and batteries from the 918, much like the client that has asked ferrari to do with a LaFerrari.

    I don't think they'll do.
Time has now come for downsizing.
There are other routes (weight, aero...)

I'd want that V8 in the 981 Cayman R. (Manual, performance analog suspension.)

Are those actually the specs? If so, that's nuts!

What boggles the mind is that despite all the focus on light-weight fancy materials and with about ten times the budget, the 918 still weighs in at 3700-3800 lbs, whereas a PDK 911 weighs only about ~3100 lbs.

I would love a V8 911.... however I think a bunch of the purist guys would have a heart attack.

you cannot enlarge it much because the piston travel and size becomes an issue for a high revving engine.

That woul be neat... maybe styled by Touring or Zagato to look more like a 550 Spyder.

yeah, it's about 135 kg for the engine in the 918.

918 is packed with luxury and technology, they wanted more of a 959 and less of a Carrera GT type of a car.

I would also love a V8 911... The base car/Turbo would still be flat 6 for those purists.

The RS 4.0 was, well, 4 litres and I bet that block has another 200cc left somewhere...

That historic block was retired from civilian use. The 4.0 was it's last application. Since then, all retail 911s, NA and FA, use variations of the same block (It's heat treated differently for extreme applications.)

Doubtful, they never made anything bigger than 4.0.

Somebody more knowledgeable could know this, I'm not certain there is much meat left in the cylinder walls to bore them, so you're left with increasing the stroke, which means higher piston speed for the same rpm. That usually means that you have to lower the redline and thus you're not gaining much power, but torque might increase slightly.

The 918 V8 engine is derived directly from the power unit of the RS Spyder, which explains why it can deliver engine speeds of up to 9,150 rpm.

From the Porsche Press Release: "Like the race engine of the RS Spyder, the 918 Spyder power unit features dry-sump lubrication with a separate oil tank and oil extraction. To save weight, components such as the oil tank, the air filter box integrated into the subframe and the air induction are made of carbon fiber reinforced polymer. Further extensive lightweight design measures have resulted in such features as titanium connecting rods, thin-wall, low-pressure casting on the crank case and the cylinder heads, a high-strength, lightweight steel crankshaft with 180 degrees crankpin offset and the extremely thin-walled alloy steel/nickel exhaust system. Striking features of the V8 are that it no longer supports any auxiliary systems, there are no external belt drives and the engine is therefore particularly compact. Weight and performance optimizations achieve a power output per liter of approx. 133 hp/l – the highest power output per liter of a Porsche naturally aspirated engine – which is significantly higher than that of the Carrera GT (106 hp/l) and outstanding for a naturally aspirated engine."

Would be a nice engine for the future GT3 RS… ;)

Sharkwerks 4.1 is said to be he most incredible flat six ever. They use a custom stroker crank.

I believe there was talk about a car code named 960 which is a detuned V8 without the hybrid drivetrain loosely based on the 918 architecture...

nope, bespoke Ruf engine (although probably strongly influenced by RS Spyder's engine)

960 is a mid engined super sports car . Internally Porsche techs jokingly refer to it as the ff( Ferrari fighter ) .
Currently there is a war on the engine . There are 2 thoughts , to use the 918 engine or a twin turbo 8 cylinder . Unfortunately it seems emissions may force the final decision .

RUF makes their own car, the CTR-3, although the front clip is basically 911 derived.

Seen that before and assumed it was a re engineered 911 but thought they used 911 engines in everything.
