My car came with new R2 points and microswitch installed. The wires for the switch were not connected. The wire that goes from R2 on the front dizzy was connected but was not connected to the rear dizzy. With the engine at idle, I grounded the R2 on the rear dizzy and the engine idled down, same when grounding the rear dizzy. Sounded like everything should work.
So what does this have to do with my Tach? When I attached the wire from the front R2 to the rear R2, the Tach doubled, the engine did not speed up, 1000 RPM became 2000 RPM.

My coils have the yellow wires connected to both "+" terminals. Both "-" terminals connected to the resistors. Other sides of the resistors connected to the R1 points.
My Tach wire is connected to the Point side of the front resistor. This is where I'm not sure if correct. Too many wiring diags showing different ways to connect. Some diags show the resistors connected to the "+" side of the coil???

Now, I may not go through with setting up the R2 Points, but this Tach problem bugs me.
    Any thoughts?

Your tach should be connected to the minus (-) terminal of one of the two coils. With a double distributor fitted 308, the emission control setup with the R2 points are usually disabled by not wiring in the R2 points set. It sounds like your tach receives two impulses (one from R1, the other from R2) instead of one. Might be the position of the R2 points setup not overlapping with the R1 opening.

    Good luck,
    Adrian

I don't think the reward is worth the hassle. Now I see why most people disconnect the R2s.

I see that some people remove the double capacitor. It looks like the R1 points use one of the capacitors in the double, should I leave it?

You can leave the capacitor in place, just remove the wires going to each R2 terminal to disable the emission control/ignition retard setup.
