hmmm ... Petrus, yummy. By the way as I found out the other night when I was going to dinner at a friend's house, the cup holder in the F12 will hold a bottle of wine!

F12 looks great in all sorts of colors!

Paul (montpellier) can you share some comparisons between the F12 and the 599?

Looks great! Probably a ceramic coating, extremely time consuming to apply but works brilliantly at repelling dirt.

There are several of these new coatings out there and they do a wonderful job.

I never meant Avantador. I like that car but I love the F12.

Friend of mine had his 2014 Maserati MC Stradale ceramic coated, its his daily driver and even after heavy rains, muddy roads all that was needed was the car to be sprayed down with water and it was perfectly clean.

Well on some levels it is like comparing the 430 to the 458. The main change is of course the gearbox, and whilst in the 599 it was never a real issue, I always felt it was a compromise, and only in the 599 GTO did it feel fully sorted. The chassis as well is a big step forward , the car feeling less likely to bite you, and it deals (in bumpy road setting) very well with the awful UK B roads. It is still practical, in that I carry 2 full size Rimowa cases with me to the airport, and it is very refined and quiet when needed. Both cars share the same engine feel, almost like pulling by an elastic band and fearsomely fast all the way through the rev range. The 599 is a little more elegant in design in my view, and whilst it was a big car, I never worried about it as some did. The F12 is smaller, but it is still a wide car. I feel the leather quality was of a far higher level in the 599, it smelt better and felt far more robust. The 458 was the same, I believe suppliers changed and IMHO in a few years you will see some pretty rough leather interiors on 458/FF/F12 cars. Not sure if others have noted the same. In conclusion, I loved my 599, but the F12 is an amazing performance car that can be used day to day. I had both 458 coupe and Spider, and would never go back to one, the F12 does so much more for more of the time, and really is as fast as I would want in any road car. The noise I also find more than enough for daily use, and at full rpm, it is simply sensational. Trouble is you only ever need 4000 rpm or you are losing your licence. 599 is currently the Ferrari bargain in my view.

The leather supplier hasn't changed and won't change as Poltrona Frau is owned by none other than LdM...

Random observations after 2,100 miles in the F12 in about 6 weeks.

    - I like the direct steering now. It's like when high def tvs first came out and it sort of hurt your eyes but once you are used to it, everything else seems dull. ditto with the steering.

-I'm used to the wheel. Feels as natural as when commands are on stalks. I'm not afraid of the windscreen wiper button, I have mastered it!

    - Turns out the rev counter is illuminated, but only at night. Even if you manually turn on the lights, if it senses it is daytime the rev counter is a dark tunnel. According to the manual it's to "increase visibility" - go figure

    - Turns out you can get traffic information on the navigation even though it's probably one of the hardest nav screens to read that I have ever seen. You need to add traffic to the satellite account.

    - Turns out there are voice activated controls! There is no mention in the manual except that to activate the voice control you click the left button behind the wheel. you can actually give commands like "tune to satellite channel 100" or "tune to am 1010" and it works almost all the time providing you can actually get system into the voice activated mode. In certain settings e.g. if you have the large speedo on the right screen it doesn't work - duh. I think you can also control the navigation but I'm not smart enough to figure out how.

    - The gearbox is fabulous if you are driving like a bat out of hell. It's clunky if you are driving at real world speeds in either manual or auto. I hate to say it but the Porsche PDK if far superior and to the layman the shift times feel as fast if you have the PDK set to "super sport" in the Porsche.

    - If you drive around crappy roads the lifter is really handy. It's marginally more expensive than the $3,500 carbon fiber cup holder but probably more useful at avoiding damage to the car. When coming out of steep driveways etc. it is really useful.

    - I have been waiting to pass judgment on the controls of the 2 screens, but let me just get it off my chest - they are truly crap. They are not intuitive, the visibility is poor, the buttons are hard to operate when you are driving, changing a setting on one screen can make the setting on the other screen change (which is very irritating), the readouts at each manettino setting that clog the left screen are pointless as far as I can see. However I do really like the tire temperature sensors as the Pirellis have slightly less grip than Gandhi's flip flops when cold so knowing when they are warm is really going to help you not go backwards through a hedge.

    - The seat are great. I have fully automatic Daytona seats and they are by far the most comfortable and supportive seats I have ever had in a sports car.

    - The driving experience it truly rewarding. You always feel like you are sitting on top of a wild beast, but banging up and down that gearbox or going around corners at speeds that make your palms sweat is laugh out loud fun. I guess that's the bottom line. I love the car and it makes getting out of bed every morning a lot easier.

Thats a fantastic post. Thank you. What a beast!

Based on my time with my 458 I agree with your comments on the screens and controls. One other criticism I have is each screen has a totally different control- to the left is an old style 4 direction pad and to the right is more of an iDrive inspired control.

Is the DCT different from the 458? Maybe its just that I don't use the 458 for serious commuting but the DCT in the 458 is really fantastic.

When top gear first reviewed the 458, Jeremy did a thing on the nav, "I don't how fast I am going but I know I am somewhere near..." Sounds like the intuitiveness of the navigation has remained the same.

    Ghandi's flip flops:D

    That's about 20L per 100km. For 740hp that doesn't seem that bad.
