WHY IS FRIDAY "DARK" IN MONACO?
Traditionally (I.e. In the 60s etc) it was a day off for the drivers to socialise and enjoy Monaco. It's been kept because it gives the drivers a free day for PR Sent from my SM-P605 using Tapatalk
Partly, and nowadays probably the main reason. But, IIRC, "back in the day", it was also pretty much the only chance the "locals" had to get the hell out of Dodge before the chaos of the weekend.... While "we" may not understand, many folk there have no interest in F1! Cheers, Ian
Once upon a time, Friday was Market Day in Monte Carlo, so when they began racing they reserved Market Day so as not to disrupt shopkeepers, vendors, delivery schedules. Nowadays, I'm sure it's simply a way to extort an extra day's stay from visitors to the Grand Prix. "I'm sorry, but the minimum reservation is 5 nights for the Grand Prix weekend at Monaco, rather than 4 nights minimum as for every other race".
National hangover day. - It's not completely dead. GP2 has a race on friday and I believe the Porsche supercup as well.
