What's the best option for a super or turbocharger for a carbed 308

 

Neither. Carb cars don't really work for that type of thing, that's more of an injected car modification.

 

It can be done but would take a lot of custom work.

This would get you started but I really would want fuel injection

Contact the ebay seller - he has all parts (full kit) to install a turbocharger on a carb 308.

 

I have the amerispec setup installed.

I never figured out why it was not sold much more. it gives the car just what it needs ( close to 300 bhp) and gives it the power to match the stunning appearence.

 

I purchased an early Koenig setup that I gave to my mechanic that has a 78 Koenig car. Its an Albert turbo setup that Koenig adapted for the 308. Uses a DCOE that has a split shaft so one barrel is set up as a secondary. Mocked it up last week. Can't wait to get it running.

I think sc would be better to drive tbh. The throttle response goes to crap on a single turbo car like this. Unless you can figure out a twin scroll setup so you havebsome boost at lower rpms and reduced lag, the sc setup would be more fun in a 308 style car.

Fwiw, I have a fairly big single turbo setup on my 944 and while fun, I vastly prefer the snappy throttle response and power delivery of an na motor, which is what an sc setup would be closer to. No lag or sudden punch of power as you hit the rpm where boost finally starts to build...Unless that's what you're after, but it's kind of a preference thing.

 

There has been a lot of discussion here about SC verses Turbo for the 308. The turbo is more efficient, while the SC gives you a more linear boost. Of course, twin turbos delivers the boost more smoothly than a single. On the negative side, the turbos create a lot more heat in the engine compartment. Also to be considered, the SC is much easier to dial in.

My conclusions, FWIW, for a track car, go turbo, for street, go SC. But after all is said and done, any boost is better than none on the 308. 7 lbs boost /100 hp - just do it..


One thing I forgot. For a carb 308, SC will require going to EFI. So for all practical purposes, the turbo is the only way to go.

 

I asked this a couple months ago and here is the answer I received - possible! I've been thinking about this too. As long as you don't boost the crap out of it it could be OK. Then you have to think about your supercharger mount. Best done with a Centrifugal. I like SMS's airbox / plenum. There are some tuning tricks that need to be done to the carbs for a "Blow Through" system. Hot rodders have been putting blowers on top of carbs for years. Doesn't make it "better" but it can be done. I have been thinking about plans for a plenum / air water intercooler set up after seeing SMS's rig.

 

Mine has a water/air intercooler.
