    I am starting a resto of my Maserati Bora. I am evaluating whether i do a complete engine rebuild or just the top half. Is anyone aware of an engine builder who has done a rebuild on the Maserati v8 motor that you could recommend I talk to.

    It is extremely rare to pull the heads off an older italian engine and not find oval bores, broken rings, scuffed pistons, etc, etc. You either leave it alone or do the whole job, there's usually no middle ground.

    Good news is that with modern forged pistons and clever valve contours, you can make more power with no sacrifice in driveability.

    The block will be going to Melbourne for machining (all the best engine builders here use the same Melb machine shop) so you may as well consider having the whole thing done there. Carl is a good guy to talk to.

    Carl knows plenty about broken rings and car stuff too :D

    Ian is right, do the whole lot. My car had a compression reading above 150psi in all cylinders before it was stripped down and the pic shows how all the pistons looked, not pretty with broken rings. And yes the block etc was sent to Saliba Engine reconditioners in Melbourne for machining, balancing etc

    In Melbourne Paul Placzek at Sports and Classic Cars Braeside is recommended by me. He did my Ghibli 4.7, Espada and 365 engines over the last 10 years. The advice above about doing the whole lot is good advice. The rings in the Maserati engines are notorious for doing exactly what the above photo has evidenced. Most parts are cheaper overseas. Look up Jacques at MaseratiSource. He will negotiate on job lots etc. The guys at VLG are very helpful for parts on these cars too.

    Thanks for all your recommendations. I spoke to Carl,he knows his stuff. Looks as though Melbourne is the place if you want to get the best outcome. I still have a few weeks up my sleeve before i have to make a decision. Phil, who is VLG.

    VLG = Vintage Lamborghini Garage
    The guys on the forum are all old car nuts for Lambos firstly but also many have older Maserati's too. If looking for pistons, rings, bearings, valves, guides, stems etc log a request for help. I have found the chaps on the forum to me SUPER helpful, eXtremely knowledgeable and keen to help guys keep their old classics on the road.

    Local firm & I had never heard of them.

    Coincidentally my man has just put my 3F Land Cruiser Engine
    through there last week for a build.

    Been there for 30 years that he knows of.

    A Maltese gentleman who is very fussy & picky regards his jobs.

    Apparently does all the V8 Supercars.
