Hello, my F430 developed a deafening knocking noise, which sounds like it's coming from the front of the pass side of the engine. Interestingly, no check engine light.

Any ideas on what to prepare myself for?

Sounds like its exhaust related. Check all your exhaust connections for cracks and pay close attention to the headers they may be the source.

I would not start the engine again until you consult a mechanic. That sounds serious.

Probably a header crack/support crack.. but I'd get that looked at if I were you..

No CEL. I will send the video to the service advisor on Monday. I think it's way louder than a header/exhaust problem. It sounds like something in bouncing around inside the engine.

Did I mention it's loud? Deafening loud?

I am fearing catastrophic engine damage. I was curious if anyone on here had a similar failure.

Variator spring failure or you sucked a piece of catalytic converter into a cylinder. Definitely mechanical.

Did your exhaust change tone at all, and are you getting any kind of unusual smoke out of the exhaust? Also, has your car ever had the headers replaced? If you're saying it's deafening loud it should will be exhaust related and not internal. If you're diy I would start with the exhaust.

Quite possibly a bearing failure, getting to be seen more often. #2 typically, the knock is the piston hitting the head. It needs looking at asap

I would not start that engine again as others have stated. Sounds mechanical, not like a rattle or a leak to me.

I would say lifter too. Bad lifter or broken valve spring

Sounds valve related to me. Can't tell fully from the vid but pretty much sounds as if it's frequency is occurring at almost exactly 1/2 engine rpm. If that the case it's valve related. It sounds like only one so whoever said broken valve spring is likely correct. Over rev the engine ever?

Unfortunately that sound is definitely mechanical, which will mean best case - collapsed lifter/bad camshaft lobe or worst case rod bearing. Diagnosis by a qualified tech will not require engine removal but the fix most likely will. Very sorry to hear your noise. I would not run the engine at all.

Hi, I've had a similar noise and the Ferrari mechanics concluded the noise were coming from the tappets (hydraulic valve lifters). But just to make sure, I also ordered new headers for my car which was installed today. I'll probably get the car back early next week, since they'll have to re-assemble everything having brought the engine down for the tappet change. Will let you know how it goes.

For the meantime heres the video of mine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCkvfpghVpg
