This is the new California: The California T.

I dunno, $30k is a big price tag for an experiment unless you've checked out the exact car in that colour. I believe that's what it costs and the car takes longer to build when you order a layer paintjob. I'd rather spend the money on premium wheels and some Novitec Rosso upgrades.

I like the chunky pastel look although a matte finish would show the lines better, like bianco fuji. Wraps also come in matte finish and would be much easier to refresh. The service guys didn't extend the friendly advice for no reason.

Not interested in an argument. But the point that i was trying to make is that even if Jeremy Clarkson is a great entertainer, i will never listen to him when it is time to buy a new car.

Prior of course, is not that entertaining, but he is good at relating the facts about the car he is reviewing.

Chris Harris is of course good at both.

I am seriously considering Ferro after seeing pics of the F12 & FF in that color. Currently I have Titiano (or whatever they call the silver). I like it also but may go with something different this time. White is another color I like.

Ferro will be the classiest looking. Silver the prettiest.
A bit on/off about white. The shapes and curves needs metallic for best effect. It is a really elegant and classic looking car.

My wife, however, just saw the picture of the new Rossa California. She really likes it. Hmmm...

Not every debate is an argument, just as not every entertaining review is tripe. In both cases, I think the difference is how well the presenters stay on topic and whether they are well-received depends on whether the other party(ies) can maintain a sense of perspective.

Prior lost the audience and missed the plot completely but did provide a few technical tidbits. Harris understands the big picture very well and massages it to suit his lively take on the plot. Clarkson acts out the repressed cheeky schoolboy/girl lurking in us while giving us an intimate glimpse of truly exotic high and low points in motoring.

Again, whether these presenters are well-received depends on the perspectives of their audiences. After a while, we tune in because we know what to expect, pick out what we can take away. The entertainment part is a bonus.

And the noise? No point pretending it isn’t compromised by the presence of the turbochargers, because it is. There’s plenty of sound, but it’s a fatter, bassier sound than we’ve come to expect from a Ferrari eight, like a 458 sample fed through a low-pass filter. To be fair, the old California didn’t sound nearly as sonorous as its supercar cousin, either. But it will be fascinating to see how Ferrari changes the character of this engine to suit the 458 replacement, because while it works adequately as a GT motor where demands and expectations are slightly lower, it doesn’t sufficiently make the music or pull your neck hairs to attention to cut it in a car like the 458.

Definitely...perhaps the pic is bleached out, but that looks more like Titanio.

 

Having owned a Titanio 458 Spyder and owning a Silverstone F12, let me assure you that is Ferro! The car was parked half in shade which made shots, especially with an iPhone, very tricky and I accept they do not represent the actual colour that accurately although one or two are not bad. In short, it looked great and I would want it.

 

Looks better than the old one. No doubt not one of my fav. F cars, still looks sleek...

On Sound:

Boot the California T to full boost and it sounds fabulous, like the aggressive mechanical orchestra of a screaming Ferrari V8. There's more drone with steady revs at part throttle, to be sure. It's a more turbo-y, low frequency hum. Cruising with the top closed actually makes it sound better, presumably because it filters the hum. The California T doesn't sound bad in any circumstance, but that steady rev hum is the only hint that there might be a turbo engine under the hood.

On Lag:

You won't find lag, at least during a road drive. Slam the gas pedal and the longitudinal acceleration comes at close to one g, in long, Ferrari-appropriate swells that make passengers suck breath and shake equilibrium-disrupting cobwebs from the head. There's no letup before it hits the redline and shifts; the longer you can keep it floored, the better. The California T's 0-60 times are more than quick enough for bragging rights, but, thanks to the variable-torque management, they don't even get you to maximum torque. The higher the gear, the stronger the pull. This turbo engine just keeps accelerating toward the horizon.

And an interesting note that reminds all that this is a serious performance car:

Development driver Fabrizio Toschi reports that the 458 Italia manages 1:25 around Ferrari's Fiorano test track, as opposed to 1:29 for the California T. That makes the T a hair quicker than Ferrari's last turbo, the F40.

 

Sorry, I was not clear at all. What I meant to ask is if Ferro in person appears darker and deeper than Titanio. Some pics I see make it look almost like mercury - a very deep and liquid appearance. Just wondering if that is accurate, never having seen one in person. As you have noted, pictures are not always telling the whole story.

We are going to spec one out in a few weeks. The dealer's configurator might be better representative than the Ferrari website. I hope so because all the colors on the website configurator look ugly. Of course, if they have an F12 on site, it is possible I change my mind...

I have had Ferro on a 458...its very nice. It is clearly darker than Titanio...pretty much between Titanio and Silverstone. Like Silverstone it has warm tones in it that allow it to take an earth toned interior (among other colors), whereas Titanio works in the grey/blue/black family. You really see this when you go to the dealer and lay the leather color options on top of the paint samples.

 

Given the F40 is 30 years old i would hope this was faster
