The stats are old, they aren't rates per 100,000, and they are ONLY about handguns, therefore removing deaths by rifles etc. The stats are somewhat misleading, BUT: But that doesn't change that the murder rate in Australia is 1 per 100,000, UK is 1.2, and the USA is 4.8. Critics of the poster that you, uh, posted, complain that it ignores that some of the countries have stacks of weapons (Switzerland is the common comparison) and therefore try to say that having guns isn't the problem. To a degree, I find that this argument goes both ways. Okay, so having lots of gun isn't the problem? So then it must say a lot about US culture then, as you guys just love murdering then. The fact of the matter is, that as far as "First World" countries, the USA has the highest murder rate. The countries that have worse rates, are basically not considered to be as "civilised". I don't think guns are inherently bad, but the more extreme side of right wing politics in the USA seems to have this ridiculous notion that the only way to solve their gun violence problem is to have MORE guns. So in conclusion, the stats were correct, but yes misleading due to population difference. Rates per 100,000 are a better metric.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, but the times I have posted similar information on American based forums, the response has never been quite as positive...
You should have seen some of the fights I had with them when I worked for Digital and "participated" in the online company forums, the same "normally" rational , intelligent people who helped design networking protocols were absolute morons when it came to guns, being unable to see any logic or commonsense, some even saying they were going to come over and sort me out ........ I of course told them where the airport was and that I'd be waiting. Turns out, some of those guys now own Ferraris and are on this site Nice guys but still tilted
Nice guess, but no. Reminds me of the time I got lost during a navex. Remind me to tell you about it one day.
Haha! I doubt there's a pilot alive who doesn't have a funny "getting lost on a navex" story. I have some absolute shockers. Not on a navex, but just after getting my licence as a 17 year old I somehow convinced some family friends that I could fly them to Canberra for their daughter's wedding. Long story short, but they missed the wedding (arrived just in time for the reception) and then on the way home we had to stop overnight in Mildura and they missed going back to work the next day. Strangely I didn't see much of them after that weekend... Anyhoo, somewhere on the Coorong?
I'm sure if you keep naming places you'll get it eventually! I was at Boston Bay at the time I took that photo.
There you go then. Lincoln. I used to have a holiday house on Thistle Island which you can just see from Boston Bay from the right angle. Love that area. One of the best places in the world, bar none. And I just discovered that if you google Thistle Island the first picture that comes up is one I took from in front of our old house! Bastards!
