Btw, just read this article and thought about you! Frank's PlanesV3 P.S. This is exclusive to you and the F-Chat community since it hasn't been shared on the McLaren website yet!
Thanks for the overall post and thoughts. One thing regarding your second paragraph (straight line acceleration past 100 kph): Testing has not demonstrated your conclusion; especially the "pull away" part. It may be a perception with some, but certainly not the reality as it exist, at the moment. The 918 has been at worst 2/10th's of a second off, same/similar or better than the other vehicles tested so far (remember the Autocar test for the P1, and some of the other stuff we've seen recently) in 1/4 mile and high speed testing. And this has been on [relatively smooth] tracks, and testing grounds. I'm sure in the real world, on real roads, the 918 will do even better, creating a larger gap. So until shown or proven otherwise, it appears to be a misstatement. Remember the weight gap is not nearly as much as some originally, erroneously thought. Quite frankly, all three of these cars need to be data tested more ofte, especially the LaFe and P1. Apparently, there will be an upcoming Autocar and Car and Driver test with 918 Spyder. Will we see any, anymore with the P1 and Lafe?...Stay tuned.
This wasn't just some wild assumption by those who don't favor the car. It was Porsche's own data that they published which gave the whole world that impression. 918 a match for Ferrari and McLaren in corners, says Porsche | Automotive & Motoring News | Car Magazine Online >8^) ER
Thanks for the clarification. So basically you only get 1 run down the 1/4 mile in the USA, then they tell you you have to install a roll bar to run it again. That sucks...
Hahaha. I can only imagine all the P1, 918, LF owners showing up to the strip with full rollcage, NHRA license, transmission shield, fireproof engine blanket, window net, and a full fireproof suit and neck collar. Oh, and a parachute on the back in case they accidentally pick up a couple extra MPH trap speed.
Carmaven, you are right, final figures are not out yet and they should be much closer than people think. (You ordered a 918?)
Which would you take? ..........for me LaFerrari https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/t1.0-9/10352349_10152185857508333_6364683591628516154_n.jpg
No one is giving a monkey about the yellow one! Hard to believe they cost the same next to each other
Both...which I'm trying hard to get my Laferrari and hopefully yes soon. For now what an amazing car the P1 is to drive, and when I'm busy I just start the car for few minutes early morning and call it a day then head to work. And I'm sure the Laferrari going to be the thunder storm when it's arrive one day. Mbn
Nobody want a monkey for a P1, WTF! Yes, is hard to believe they cost the same. Why? Because they do not. Actual cost of final product from the information from my cousin at Ferrari is that LaFerrari has much cheaper price compare to P1. Crazy no? Cheaper product and they sell it for much more. How you say? Rip off?
Finally got a chance to see the 918 Spyder I have on order. Flew to Chicago last Wednesday night for an 11:00am appointment to drive it on the Autobahn race track in Joliet, Illinois. The first one I saw was on display in the garage area and was the actual car that broke the 7 minute mark at the Nurburgring. They also had on display, which I never looked at, a 919 Porsche race car. My initial impression after climbing in the car and then trying to exit was 'wow, this thing is sure hard to get in and out of!' The exterior and interior of the car looked better in real life than in photographs. Melissa, the Porsche 918 specialist greeted me and booted up my order from the computer with it showing on a large LCD screen with my Martini racing wrap and red interior. I selected #1 for the side of the car, which she entered in the computer for the final build. I brought a friend, Mark who was signed up as a guest but to his delight was allowed to drive the cars. Mark took most of the images on the attached album with his 35mm camera. A few of the images I took with my Olympus point and shoot under water camera. Initially the professional test drivers for Porsche drove a 911 turbo S to show us the lay out of the course and the preferred lines. We were allowed to drive the 911 turbo S with out the test driver, but with another turbo S setting the pace. I must admit I do not get those cars! I never liked cars where the engine hangs out the back and dislike the sensation caused by the weight transfer going hard into corners. In my opinion the 911's only salvation is reliability and truck like ease of entry. But then, I didn't come to Chicago to drive these Dinosaurs. My test driver initially took the wheel of the 918 and I struggled to get in the passenger side, having to remove the helmet and putting it on inside the car. He started the car in electric mode from the pit lane demonstrating the all electric acceleration, I kid you not it laid me back into the seat. The track did not have any really long straights, but on one he demonstrated max power, and holy crap it literally took your breath away and felt like the back car of a rollercoaster going down a very steep drop! By the way my test driver was the one who ran the ring in under 7 minutes. I asked him about the rumors that he slowed down at the end due to running out of battery power. He said " I didn't run out of power, they called me on the radio and said back off". In other words they sand bagged their best time just in case Mac with the P1 bettered their time, which they did not. Now my turn, I was actually able to get into the drivers side with the helmet on this time. My driving impression is that this is a really nice and extremely fast car. Like the 458 Ferrari it is a digital driving experience with far too many bells and whistles. I felt extremely comfortable driving this car at speed. Steering is very predictable and the car corners very flat. The sound from the exhaust stacks, at the back of your head, is fantastic. The seats are very comfortable and supportive, but the dash controls require a learning curve and study of the owners manual. Rear visibility is negligible but their is a blank button on the steering wheel that can be programmed for the rear view camera to be on whenever you are driving. The PDK 7 speed twin clutch transmission was remarkable in automatic mode, with smooth, crisp down shifts to the proper gear when entering sharp corners. One anecdote: on one of the straights I turned the switch to full track mode and nailed it. Just as I was approaching 170, concentrating on the speedometer I look up and the 911 in front of me is breaking for a corner and I am rapidly approaching him with over 100mph speed difference. I can remember shouting "get out of my way!" as I nailed the brakes. The test driver sitting next to me was just laughing his head off. By the way the brakes are marvelous despite some criticism in the car mags. Thanks to the brakes I never really got close to the other car. All this being said this is one remarkable car that, as is far too often the case in the digital age, is too easy to drive fast. The consolation I have, is that I am not getting this car since these were the base models. I expect the Weissach edition to be much more hard core, like the Scuderia was to the F430 Ferrari. When we came into the garage area after the event, Melissa asked me what I thought. I said I really like the car, although I had some concerns about egress but the test driver assured me that I will develop a technique like he had to. Also I mentioned that the red interior in the two test cars was closer to burgundy then red like my R8. She informed me that I could request a custom interior to match the Martini red stripe on the outside of my car. I asked her about the price and she emailed Germany. About 30 minutes later I was quoted $6,500 and I gave her the go ahead to change the interior. This car in the Martini wrap will be quite the stunner! Can't wait till November when I have been promised delivery. Melissa says that USA deliveries will start in July. Thanks for the writeup, and congratulations on your 918! Interesting that Marc Lieb was there as he's supposed to be running Le Mans pretty soon...
That's a great writeup and Congrats! ordering one and I'm sure you well be happy with it. Some people here should Learn from you a guy loved a car preferred it than other cars and order it. Easy and simple now some here will try to put others down just because they went different route. Like some here talking about P1 funny battery issue which is a software glitch n some cars as far as i know and laferrari overhang ( maybe sticky parts one day) an how the 918 took forver to come, weight. Etc Like they bought the best and others just need to follow what nonsense info based one issue or just seat of pants lol... Just to prove one thing I bought the better car than you !? forgetting in few months few cars will come that will be such new benchmarks Hint: im meeting in few days with some hoping they show me something new. Anyway I'm sure you bought one hell of a car and I'm happy for you after all its you who will enjoy it so enjoy it in good health. Mbn
Just read, that Top Gear have tested the 918 and we have a new record around their track by a very wide margin! Also faster than Golf R32 in e mode! JC and Stig were very impressed and P1 didnt show, again... Actual time when broadacasted! Wdoom, can you confirm?
