This remains false - the project was in the black when production completed and the company continues to profit from the F1 to this day:

    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/143152531-post9999.html

The 40% investment Mercedes made in McLaren was tremendous for McLaren - impossible to argue otherwise given it gave them the capital to build the McLaren Technology Centre, exposed them to a world class automotive organization - benefiting from their knowledge and expertise in production vehicle manufacturing and gave them more credibility in the industry as a capable engineering firm. if anyone lost on that deal it was Mercedes when they exited, but you would have to base that on whatever price they were paid for their stake in the company by Bahrain's Mumtalakat Holding Company which has not been made public.

You understand incorrectly - other than the 93mm bore, the V-angle and other basic design elements common with most high performance engines, nothing left exists of the Nissan engine that was originally intended to be used as a starting point.

Well at least we agree on one important point.

918 is a worthy successor to the Carrera GT, 959, et al. Porsche may not be perceived as a brand that is capable of selling a new car for a million dollars to some but 700+ 918 owners would argue otherwise.

What I mean to say is I think mclaren want customer cars to be used. Not just final spec cars but real cars.

I hope it will happen this summer but its anyones guess really.

Bit disappointing that they didn't do the TG lap.

In any case, verdict is still out. It doesn't matter why they test or don't test. The cars will get in the hands of journalists and then we'll know the outcome.

So far there is a Mira lap for the P1, a NR lap for the 918, and Fiorano for the LF.

Hopefully they'll get together in the next ear or so to do head to head on same day.

Nice little article, and more importantly--video from Tom Murphy of Wards auto.

In the video, we (I say WE, cause it was obviously edited for time) go on a 11:51 minute ride and demonstration of the 918 Spyder by Porsche's Trent Warnke through the roads and highways of Michigan in the US.

There's some pretty wicked acceleration, interior/dash board graphics and engine/system sounds, along with some information that FF members may appreciate (programmable buttons; first carbon fiber--air bag--race sanctioned seats; wing operation; electronics, manufacturing, etc.).

To Scuderia and others: The video answers your question starting the engine ICE engine from a stand still (start in Sports, race mode, or "push accelerator pedal all the way down"), amongst other fancy. The last one (accelerator pedal past detente) you already knew of course.

It's obvious, these cars are finding owners homes, appearing on roads now (and according to Porsche--elsewhere--having approx 100 more to sell), as this video is more detailed, prospective owner experience focused than previous ones to Leno, etc..

    Enjoy

You will entertain any and every conspiracy theory you come across regarding the 918's lap time despite the fact that Porsche have released video evidence proving their claim - yet when anyone here questions McLarens claims you get defensive and insist that any person that doubts or questions them is foolish to do so

I always forget about the 959 (as I don't care for it) until now. I think the 918 is a perfect successor to the 959; both are laden with electronics and have many luxuries. Both are heavy but very fast.

The Carrera GT doesn't belong in the list. It is a completely different philosophy than the 959 and 918.

Wow, that video is certainly different than I posted. Lol

HVS, appeared to run in "Race Mode" through out most of the course, and only used his "hot lap button" toward the last straight (where he reached about 325 kph), with the Boost guage (unless I'm mistaken) not really changing/basically staying the same through out the entire course.

Of course, this was also reported to be his first lap with out traffic, as the previous starter/get acquainted laps apparently did.

True/agreed (though how could you ever forget about the 959, lol).

However, 918 is more Carrera GT than 959 (despite the current cars breathtaking technology). It's actually appears a "hybrid" (how appropriate) of both vehicles.

Remember, 959 was an essentially extensively reworked 911 (albeit with awesome technology), that had to deal with, work around the 911's inherent traits (height, rear engine, large internal, structural components, etc.), and appeal to REAL Rally racing to boot.

The 918 is no such animal. It's a white paper/clean sheet design, where Porsche could solve any potentially conflicting issues through design (speed, acceleration, handling, feel, weight, luxury, economy, etc.), while focusing on predominantly race tracks and roads, while keeping the COG as low as possible compared to the 959.

Yes, the 918 is heavy compared to the Carrera Gt. But then again, all of the Hyper-Brids (and many current "digital" supercars, by established manufacturers) would be by that comparison. It's smartly packaged in the 918 (part of that clean sheet design).

Nonetheless, all three are modern Porsche Supercars (considering Porsche's long history of making them), ushering in new technology, exotic metals, components, and processes to the industry with large performance envelopes to boot, thus will be grouped together.

    Oh no. No problem.

That was great (once, twice, etc., doesn't matter)!

    They're just different.

One video appears more road, owner, driving focused. And the other is more performance, bench mark oriented (and much larger).

    Thanks again!

I've cast no doubt on their ability to do a 6:57 or the proof they presented - that's totally irrelevant. The point you have missed is they acted like it was all they could do and now insiders are suggesting it wasn't and of course other insiders have suggested repeatedly that the car will be faster in its final spec. How your response challenges my claim that this N'Ring nonsense is all a big game is quite beyond me...?

I do believe I said this long before McLaren did or didn't have a lap or two in the P1 'round there.

I'll get you another box of tissues. ;)

I would love to see 918 break it's own record .
Either with the same or different street or race tyres.
That is publicity, pride, money cannot buy.

Yeah the whole "Porsche told the driver to back off" story is so inane.

I can fully understand Porsche further developing the car after the 6:57 and the car being capable of a faster time. To me it is a little less pretty than first-time-best-effort, sort of like Nissan goes back every year and sets a quicker time with the GT-R. But it makes sense, and is not in any way dishonorable.

I can understand McLaren not releasing your lap time and just stating that they were under 7 min. It bugs the hell out of me, and I would love to see an official time, but I can fully understand that they have a lot to lose by saying e.g. "it does a 6:45" and then Ferrari, Porsche, Radical, et al, releasing an updated time of "6:43" or developing their next car with the sole intent to beat that time. Again I see the logic, but it's no fun and casts a lot of doubt.

The rumor that Porsche told their driver to hold back on the last part of a lap to show an artificially slow time is not only inane, as they're telling the world that the car is slower than it really is, but it's also a complete lie to the public and, more importantly, to their own customers. After being so disingenuous, if they release an actual time, are we then supposed to believe it? I don't think Porsche's PR strategy is deceit and deception; they're better than that.

Rivalry among the three brands is obviously extreme and reflected by the post of respective fans. Ferrari with the most experience has never allowed it's cars to be tested/timed on a track and that is a smart move. They are not going to get involve in any comparison with either P1 or 918. McLaren being a new kid on the block has gone on the record on how the P1 will rule the track. Porsche's fantastic ring time and their comment on going back and doing a better time has in my opinion held back McLaren from posting their time and put them in a spot. I applaud all three for producing three fantastic cars. With high import duties and the fact that Singapore is RHD, i don't have to struggle to decide which car i should buy. That is rather unfortunate as i would be elated to own any of them.

But you're forgetting the 918 has 2 different versions. As far as I can tell no media has had a chance to drive a 918 with the wessich pack yet. I'm betting Porsche is holding out a faster ring time from the wessich pack car. They set a time and wait for mclaren or ferrari to set a time then obliterate them with the lighter car.

FWIW, the current 918 Ring time WAS set with a Weissach Pack car.

So a great DD, suitable for weddings, and not as extreme as the p1 or laferrari.

Porsche reps are being tight-lipped publicly other than to say it comfortably beat the fastest time "by a wide margin".

Very...with real wheel drive and less hp form all the others.

My friend just called me the 918 it's very comfortable he sid it feels heavy no question the P1 to him a different in terms of accelerating handling lighter and woow factor.

He owns both but he admit the 918 much as a daily driver and the P1 a driver car for raw brutal personal moment.

Stanger he is a porch fanatic so I'm driving it in few weeks and I will report back,

And sure if it's faster than the P1 I will admit it or slower.

Can't wait until mid 2015 ;) ops off topic sorry.
