Don't be fooled. If there was a half decent reason for McLarens withdrawal from the test or any way to put a positive spin on it then Erik would have shared it here. The fact that he hasn't made any excuse on McLarens behalf yet leads me to believe that he doesn't know any more than the rest of us or that McLaren were simply scared.

Sometimes Silence (or saying simply saying "I don't know") is the best response, instead of a continual defensive posture, inane explanations, and/or some regurgitated PR Laden--Corporate dribble. However, I'm sure some of us appreciate the entertainment factor of the histrionics?

Nonetheless, if/when McLaren comes up with some clandestine explanation, I'm sure we'll hear of it!? However, when you really think about it; there really isn't any [reason] outside of showing up? This was the second time. And the first one was already delayed (if all this is true, which it appears to be, unless the P1 magically shows up on their broadcast vs the 918, and this was all a roost). Not! Lol

And of course this doesn't take into account any other previous Dance/Limbo Moves, skating of the facts, and unfulfilled hyperbole/promises by McLaren. Nothing against McLaren or any of it's emissaries (official or non official). They make good cars. Just recounting the ballyhooed facts, events, non events.

    To be continued.........

Weird. Porsche's hypercar looks best in Ferrari/Italy's historic motorsports color and Ferrari's hypercar looks best in Porsche/Germany's historic motorsports color (or at least a variation thereof)....

As you can see the circle-jerk of inutile/snarky replies from those who contribute no value here has already started. No excuse or explanation is ever going to satisfy them so we'll just skip it. :)

Carmaven , I can confirm categorically that there was no p1 at dunsfold with the 918 .

Official line was " this is not a true representation of what our car can do "( give or take ) . Same as last year and you can make of that what you may .

Personally I actually agree , a "lap" round an airfield is not really representative of what these cars can do or are about . It would have been very interesting to see though , a pity from a personal perspective but no big deal in the grand scheme of things .

Any reason why shouldn't we believe the Porsche faithful? It would be a crying shame if after 520 pages you decided to give us the silent treatment now.

Like most posters I was under the impression that McLaren were happy to put the P1 up against the 918 earlier in the year but declined because of bad weather. If this is true and they have now changed their mind then Top Gear will give McLaren a good kicking. The P1 doesn't deserve this.

Not liking the green LaF. I think blue is the best choice. Has there been a white one yet?

Kinda like it. It's normally a Lambo color.

I suppose a normal red LAF cant get enough attention.

:Dlol. A 4700 lb mid engine hypercar...

    it's all engine though...2 X P1 ICE engine...

    918 , 3700 lb wet.

    P1 , 3300 lb wet. 2 WD. each wheel drive 1650 lb

918, 2WD, each wheel drive 1850 lb, 4WD, 40/60, each wheel drive only approx 1000 lbs.

(bad maths, but you get the idea.)

Skip it because you've run out of excuses? Erik, if there was any kind of legitimate reason for McLarens withdrawal from the test we both know that you wouldn't be able to stay silent while the rest of us speak ill of your beloved P1. The fact that you can't muster up any kind of sorry excuse or defense this time speaks volumes.

I think a lot of people who are suspicious, or even criticizing McLaren, would give them a pass, if it wasn't for all the hoopla and grand proclamations that were made about the P1 (and it's boosters "amped up" criticism of all things Ferrari/LaFe and Porsche/918). So people just like to beat on them, and some of their seemingly unmerciful defenders. I think that's a fair statement. Nonetheless, they could have justified that self promotion/hyperbole on the show (or at least part of it) with a bang up performance.

Of course that track is not representative of what EITHER CAR could do (Notwithstanding any natural advantage the P1 should have on that track to begin with). Though that makes sense in practicality. And I agree. It's still obviously an excuse; cause we would have had an opportunity to see both cars head to head on the same track, same day, same driver, and McLaren (after all the mighty and breathless pontifications apparently) blinked....I mean, they said they would show up; then didn't.... Twice!... And with excuses (at least the first time).

Yeah, many times comes down to the lines, size and profile of the car (besides what we/our minds imagine what various brands should look like, and in what color).

The irony is: We usually don't get information, but a PR spiel (regarding the info allegedly, directly from McLaren insiders).

I'll illustrate how/why. Think about it:

If we were actually getting TRUE INSIDER INFORMATION, wouldn't we get an insider saying something like "Man we screwed up with that Nurburgring thing", because??...What about, "Oh, you know why it performed differently in those high speed Autocar acceleration test?" "It's because when we did our testing, we only included the ones with a tail wind", as an one example...Or even this latest Top Gear thing. Someone would say (or we would be told), "yeah that was so and so in marketing who screwed that up". Or, "You know why the P1 didn't appear? It's because it can't do (whatever; place in your reason)". That's true insider information. It's when you get, or find out a/the reason why somethings not working, didn't work in the corporation. And it would have to be credible or make sense. Not just any answer to say you gave one. Of course, if you were truly getting that info, you would call it your opinion (or say "I heard through the grapevine"), to begin with as to not OUT your information source. But that's another matter for another day. Lol

In my opinion, what we receive mostly here are excuses, PR, Spin, personal opinions, and clandestine defenses (once again, regarding stuff, we're told is directly from anonymous McLaren insiders). And I repeat: None of which are independent, true, insider information; telling us why someone screwed up or why something can't, didn't work.

Anyone can/would relay positive information. That's called PR/Propaganda. However, it wouldn't be independent.

PS: That's nothing personal or against any of the McLaren diehards, and any other good info or insights they normally provide. Most of them are nice people, posters. It was just an assessment of what we're getting in regards to that "McLaren Insiders" context. That's all.

The funny thing is that while these McLaren "insiders" are totally reluctant to talk about anything that may paint the P1 in a negative light, they are more than happy to talk about any issues/problems regarding the Ferrari and Porsche.

For months Erik persisted in telling us that Ferrari were having major issues, so much so that all LaFerrari deliveries for the UK and USA would be delayed by no less than one year. He made the controversial claims several times in this very thread and insisted that the he had no doubts whatsoever about the accuracy of the information he was sharing here.

Well, UK deliveries are well underway and, according to some sources, there are already cars on US soil. The information that Erik shared here was bull****. I'd be interested in hearing his thoughts on the matter now that he has been unequivocally proved wrong. Will he stand by his unfounded claims? Will he admit that he was wrong? Or will he remain silent?

Another problem they have is a couple of years ago , the top gear lap was a "representation of what our car can do " after all they baked a celebratory cake when the 12slaughtered the 458 on top gear track. Now it's suddenly not important ...
The inconsistencies make them look bad . Top gear wanted both cars there , so the teams / manufacturers would be there to look over each other's car , make jokes , etc etc . Plus they figured it would just be better viewing . Mclaren had a genuine excuse IMHO last time , a damp lap would have humiliated the p1 .
This time it was a lovely day and bone dry .

Thanks mate . Months back I wrote about the performance , the optimisation , top gear , ring time , ACTUAL WEIGHTS of the cars etc etc and things I see and or experience myself directly .
I try to post only stuff I hear myself , directly from my friends from people I actually know and trust . To be fair uk scene much smaller than rest of world and I'm lucky to have good friends in Porsche etc.
