Would you buy this 360? PPI report included

It seems to need around $11,000 in service plus tires and it will still be seeping oil from 3 areas. Not knowing the asking price you should factor this work into your offer. Keep in mind all of the recent talk here about the heat exchanger going bad on cars lacking annual fluid changes. That is another 2k. I would not be too worried about the stereo but it adds nothing to the value. If you buy it at the right price it might be a good car to rack up miles on and not get hit too hard with depreciation.

 

I think it is okay, just take into consideration the work they quoted.

The evap monitor being off is normal for a 99. All others are set so it should pass smog.

 

Make him a low offer, gives you more $$ power to bring car up to date.

 

When I read the report I was thinking that this car is for someone who intends to own it for some time... not own it for a year then sell it. Personally I would find a nicer example if I were to own it for only year or so.

Interesting PPI. I read that "visual inspection of clutch shows ......". You need to do a search on "visual inspection" and you quickly find out that, unless you drop the transmission and ACTUALLY look at the clutch, there is no way to do a "visual" inspection of the clutch. Based on a $325 PPI, I guarantee you this was not done.

So, what does this mean? My guess is that the car mechanic "kind of" over estimated the things wrong with the car. Changing the brake fluid and brake pads is very easy (do a search). All the other items seemed normal for a car that age. Again, we do not know what the asking price is???? An after market car stereo is the least of your worries- as the Becker is a piece of ****. A Wal Mart stereo is better than what came with the car.

It would be great if you gave us more information about the price, maintenance etc.

 

OK, that helps. You need to go back a couple of days and look at the thread "what did you pay for your 360?" I think that will help you ALOT. I think the car is priced at the upper limit for a 99. Just my opinion.

 

its a super low mileage car with only 21k miles on a 99 so that is a plus on the price and if you search my history here, you may find this is the only time I am going to say price is too high

I had to do my ball joints and it was a lot more than that quote once they got into it and I still have front suspension parts that need replacement this year. I think you can do a clutch inspection without dropping the tranny so I think that is fine. Tires are at the end of their useful life due to age not thread wear so those need to be replaced. The "minor" leaks can be addressed as time goes on assuming they are really just "seeping" as they say. Without knowing the history I would no question about it do the belts. One thing that they mention catches me off guard, when they mention "spark plug history ?" I thought those were good for 50K miles so why worry at this time about them (unless i am wrong on the mileage). The 99's have issues with the monitors so evap being off is not a concern.

With the issues on the car which are in the big picture of things minor if you can live with the door dings (I could not and my 60k miles 99 does not have any) I would say good buy at mid-60s, ok buy at high 60's.

 

15 year old car. It is not going to be perfect. It needs a major and all those things listed are part of one. There is nothing there that screams as a problem. I'm a diy'er tbelt $160,oil filter 45, brake rotor 350, brake fluid $7, oil $7/qt, coolant $20, gear oil $35. I can rebuild a clutch plate for under $50. fuel injectors cleaned and balanced for $25 an injector. Spark plugs $8 ea.. Hill timing bearings $400. brake pads $300. There is no maintenance nightmare here just routine stuff that needs to be done.

 

Incorrect, I'm afraid. You can remove the inspection plate at the bottom of the gearbox to check for wear. Many people prefer this method for PPI as relying on the readout from the TCU isn't wise, they can wildly inaccurate or fudged for PPI.

You also don't know if this guy "kind of" overestimated the work, you haven't seen the car and you are speculating. If we miss ANYTHING during a PPI a buyer could get pretty nasty later on, you can bet we have to cover our ass and not miss things out...

 

I had the same car inspected two weeks ago by Salerno.

I spoke with Salerno and the car has a few more to dos. The AC was leaking as well. I've have not made an offer on the car. I was thinking of going in at 5k + all the work that needs to be done under the asking price. However, I've decided that I'm going to just wait another year (which kills me) and buy a f430. Every 360 I've looked at and had PPI's done need 10-15k worth of work. I'm hoping that the f430 being up to 6-7 years newer in some cases, will be in better shape. I'm not wanting to buy a car and have it need a month in the shop to get it back right. Hopefully next year I can pick up a 2006-2007 f430 with less work requirements. Wishful thinking?

 

Looks like a very thorough PPI. On one hand there is a lot of stuff there, on the other hand, I see items there that other shops might not have mentioned. If you are in for the short term, though, find something that has less issues on paper, you may have to pay more, but you're going to get it back when you sell.

 

I'd say low to mid 60s would be a reasonable. Over $70K with that amount of remedial work is too high IMO. If you pay $71k and then drop another $8k into the repairs then you have to ask yourself, is 99 with $17k miles worth $79k? After market stereo shouldn't be an issue as long as it's been installed professionally. I would say that the majority of owners have replaced their stereos as the Becker is a POC.

I bought a 00 F1 for $73,250. New tires, belt service included 17,922 miles. Couple of paint rock hits on the front bumper. Stickies not taken care of. 64% clutch life left. Decent service history but not perfect. It was yellow with black interior. Power Daytona seats.

I don't think stereo is big deal. I'm thinking of putting in a custom stereo. I will keep the original except for speakers. I think I've seen the receivers for a $100 or so on ebay. Wouldn't worry about the stereo

 

I am in Sacramento and I am familiar with that car and the dealership. After looking at it about a month ago, I decided to pass.

The dealership took it in on a trade. Apparently they have sold that particular car four times. I was told that they almost wholesaled the car because of the amount of issues.

The interior left a lot to be desired (sticky buttons all over, leather showing lots of wear, a door handle was broken, etc). Everything had a general "worn" feeling to it. The paint wasn't in the best shape and definitely needs a two stage compound / polish to bring it back to life.

Despite my excitement to find a 6-speed 360 locally, my visual inspection alone gave me pause about the car. I did not like the aftermarket stereo installation. The PPI notes confirm my doubts about the car.

Ben Salerno is the top Ferrari independent here in the Sacramento area. His PPIs are very thorough and his hands have been on most of the Ferraris in the area at one time or another. His work and opinion can be trusted.
