As one that has been and still is (from 1989 ) a work in progress, there will be challenges but
I am sure Michael will overcome them. His family will have to continue to support and most important understand the changes in his abilities.

What an absolutely wonderful piece of news to wake up to! *AWESOME*!

I too read Dr H's piece, and as usual he's no doubt pretty damn close to the 'truth', but that Sabine has made the release is the best news I've seen in a while.

Sure, there's a *long* way to go, but as some of us have been saying since day one, "if anyone can, Michael can!"

A few tears of joy here!

    Godspeed Michael

Awesome news! As I said earlier my father passed away last Monday. I wish he was here for me to tell him the good news but maybe he pulled a few strings for Michael when he got to heaven. Good luck Mr Schumacher!

I'm still digesting this. I've been receiving a lot of texts this morning from random people who have heard this from every corner of the news world. I can't tell you what a good week this has started out to be.

    Nerofer,

j'ai bemerké ( ) ca, et je suis aussi de ton opinion qu'il ya un chemin longue pour Michael, mais le fait qu'il n'est pas en coma n'en plus est un message très bon!

Fantastic news! This is obviously still a long and arduous journey for MS & family, but any progress is great. I think this forum had been left with either the expectation of the worst or the hope of something miraculous.

I think we can all unite in continuing to look for something miraculous moving forward...

I'm with the Doc - all this news says is that they have moved him from the ICU. It gives no update on his current condition beyond what we already knew, nor a prognosis.

    Glad he said it first.

We've been told he is able to communicate with his family and responds to his basic senses. That is a huge step. He's on his way.

It's not impossible to discharge from ICU straight home or to rehab. I've done it regularly and although it's not common, it's definitely not unheard of. The cases that go home are people admitted for short periods (i.e. angioedema that requires intubation until steroids and other meds bring swelling down). And obviously cardiac patients that had a heart attack can go straight home from ICU.

The people that are there for many months, like in Michael's case, can go straight to rehab. I sent a guy that was 2 months in our ICU to a vent facility for rehab and he will be vent dependent the rest of his life. He would NEVER go to the floor (medicine ward) as he's vent dependent. Lots of rules and nursing staff issues on the floor at some places just to use bipap at night let alone a full on vent.

Cliffs: people go from ICU straight to rehab/vent facilities after being trach and peg'd (feeding tube) and it's not uncommon.

Perhaps they have....because he doesn't need it any longer.

I suspect that he's been going through some form of rehab going back to when we first heard about him having moments of consciousness and opening his eyes. This would seem to suggest he has progressed enough to move onto the next step in his rehab process.

(Note: I understand the context of your post...)

    Ian,

It so happen that I was born on the french german border, and I still have some reminescence of german left. What I did this morning when I first heard the news was to go directly to Sabine's Kehm communiqué in German, because, as everyone here knows very well, each word of her communiqués are very carefully choosen.

Then Florian posted in the meantime, and my reflex was to ask to him in german if my understanding of the original -german- sentence was correct:
Sabine says in German that the "long phase of rehab' can now begin", but the way it is written suggested to me that she wanted to draw our attention on the adjective "long", on which the sentence put some emphasis, which I take as suggesting that there still remains a lot to be done.
Then Florian has the class to replay in french, that he speaks fairly well.

Basically I agree that the news are rather good; my guess is that she is nevertheless more or less suggesting something along the line: "don't get too carried away by these news".
But at least there is some hope.

There is also in other communiqués that I have seen since the mention (quoting from her?) that there will not be any more communiqué in the future on the subject, and that any person trying to steal news or informations about Michael state of health in the future will be prosecuted.

    Rgds
