Another differing point of view on today's "fantastic" news: Counterpoint: Michael Schumacher isnt really awake - Road & Track I'm with everyone else who hopes for nothing less than a full and complete recovery for Michael. Still not sure why today's news is any reason to celebrate other than the fact that the silence from his camp was lifted for very brief moment? >8^) ER
From all these articles, what i get is that the positive news is that they are OK with him leaving the intensive care unit.
But you shouldn't take that news as confirmation of his recovery progressing. We aren't being told anything new or even promising about his actual recovery. >8^) ER
Acute care hositals discharge patients when they no longer require an acute level of care or when active intervention will result in no more progress. Without a look and see its all speculation. Michael may be responding to his enviroment or may be in a vegetative state. I have had many patients years after head injuries whose main treatment consists of diaper changes. It would be a miracle if he is awake and aware after 6 months in a coma; The last real miracle was 2000 years ago,if you believe in miracles. Nothing wrong with being optimistic, but draw your own conclusions.
He was admitted to University of Lausanne hospital in Switzerland; confirmed by the hospital hours ago: "He is here, he arrived this morning," Darcy Christen, spokesman for the University Hospital of Lausanne (CHUV), told Reuters. Christen declined to say what unit Schumacher, who lives with his family in a town between Lausanne and Geneva, he was being treated in, citing medical secrecy and family privacy. His spokeswoman said earlier he was no longer in a coma.
The transfer from one hospital to the other will mainly shorten the commute for the family. I wouldn't be surprised if the previous rumors about changing his home into a hospital like environment turn out true in a few months time. Real progress would be a statement that he is off the ventilator.
I would expect the paparrazi media sharks (TMZ style) will be all over that hospital & staff over the few months and will uncover info (good/or bad).....
Might happen as Switzerland has different laws from France. I'll think of MS later this year when I stay in Lausanne. If the FChat community wants to organize something I'm sure I could leave flowers and a card with the receptionist.
Question for the medical heads out there: can you be out of a coma and go into rehab yet still be stuck on a ventilator ? I've never heard of that minus a major lung injury but I am no doc.
In the absence of some sort of neuromuscular disorder, upper cervical spine injury or pulmonary issue typically not.
Nice idea, Just on the main BBC news here, sounded a positive report, and confirmed he is out of a coma, but stressed still along way to go, and yes I agree it is nearer home for the family and friends to see him.
Happened all the time in polio cases, also in transverse myelitis. It makes me sick to see where Shumi is heading, I am going to stop commenting on this case.
What do you know, or see, that we lay people don't ? It's always appreciated when someone in the medical community can give us a deeper understanding.
