How much does a "correct" paint job cost?

I paid 7 K for a very respectable paint job on my 911 using a Glasurit base and multiple coats of clear. I took care of stripping the glass and seals and then put it back together though. 7 K paid for sanding down to primer, fill, priming, paint, clear, wet sand, cut, and polish. If I had paid someone to take the car apart and put it back together, and added in the cost for new seals, refreshing trim, etc., the final cost would definitely have been between 15 and 20 K. And that was for a car that needed only a few hours of body work due to hidden surprises.

I suspect a lot of 308s have issues hidden under the paint and would end up costing between 15 and 30 K depending how perfect the end product had to be. But honestly once a car is that nice driving it can become a stressful affair. My 308 has it's fair share of paint imperfections yet still looks great to the casual observer. And I don't have to worry about damage when I drive it since it's stone chip cherry was broken a long time ago.

 

I think the one thing that has to be clarified in this thread is paint job vs. bodywork.

Really once you get past paint job it becomes a how much do you want to or have to spend equation.

Paint jobs are one thing. Repairing a bad base(rust, accident damage that's been bondo'd), going down to metal, or perfecting Ferrari's original body work for that paint job is another.

 

Do you think it would be any less for a GT4 compared to a GTS/GTB? More flat surfaces.

Some of the glass is in with rubber, some is in with old style mastic sealant.

 

I hear what he is saying, but there's actually some Factory fillers that are better left in place, on the older models.

If you start to see hammer marks (hood and doors) and welding seams (rear engine lid), then, in my mind, you have sanded "too far"....

Others, especially those charging you an hourly rate, to put it all back, may tend to disagree!

 

Good post, it used to be that "$10K" as the number and now, for the job you describe "$20K" is more the norm.

Napolis threw that $20K number out, off the top of his head, when we were talking on the phone on my cars.....that's probably the yellow Dino Spyder street car he had done (in Italy) (not Dino Competizione)

True - the Porsche 356 is one of the easier body shapes to paint because it has no sharp edges/creases.

All of the 308s are complex shapes to paint.

 

That looks very good to me.

I have been told that the 308 can be painted with doors hung, but lots of painters do lay them flat to shoot....

 

On old cars with no rustproofing, a repaint is wasted money if you don't take the opportunity to inspect the metal. That doesn't mean removing every bit of factory body filler, but if a car is 30 years old and made of steel I would rather pay more and locate any trouble spots. (And there almost always are...)

I've been following your car's progress, and from what I have seen you are in the ball park for the respray your are getting with doors, bumpers off the car and doing it more correctly.

If you would have went to a place where you could get it for 10k, you would be spending another 20 grand to clean up the overspray on all your car parts

Post up this work In detail for everyone to judge. Let us see this work done on a civic that is beyond excellent.....if they were, Ferrari guys would take them there, and they would be winning FCA awards ,and coppa bella awards, and these shops would promote that.

He spent 14 ....asking the glass out, and other odds and ends will quickly push him into 20k territory.

Don't forget, most GOOD shops ( those with experience ) will advise you, that the glass may break in or out , and not warrenty if they remove it. Then , am owner faces another challenge.

 

It's not a simple matter of glass out. You pry the windshield out & you might crack it then you'll have all sorts of fun finding a new one AND hoping it fits. THen there's the NLA molding.

Glass in & molding off is a reasonable compromise in my book.
