FIA to back off on Formula 1 driver collision investigations - F1 news - AUTOSPORT.com GOOD! I think some of the penalties have been a bit silly and roll my eyes when I see after EVERY contact "will be investigated". It's racing. Sometimes there are just racing incidents. And other times there are Maldonados.
In light of this news I think it highly likely that the grid penalty Perez received in Canada will be removed when they meet later today Personally I think massa was equally to blame and the evidence he is bringing must be somewhat persuasive for a meeting to be convened
It was very obvious from the heli cam that Perez jerked left when Massa was alongside. The reason the meeting is going to happen is because they never heard Perez's side of the story (some journos found it quite odd at the time that a penalty was given out despite a driver not being there). I stand by my point that Perez should've been given a race ban. It's not the first time he made stupid mistakes like this.
+1 and maybe its just time to move along from this event. He may want a review but he was driving a car that was marginal and frankly might be given a harsher penalty if they really thought about this. Id be very careful If I was FI in asking for this. There was a safety issue with his car to begin with and frankly the team ignored it to gain points. No shock at that, but that should also be re-looked to be fair about the entire event. It was debatable if he should have been on the track at all. Id love to see FI provide technical data about his car. Much of the data presented was film/video. What can Crash-ez really say to begin with. Well I moved over with a car that had bad brakes and was blocking to gain points LOL! Sure amigo. That's convincing lol!
Yep. Although I disagree with the team retiring a car (or being forced to), but Perez should have driven with some of his brain activated. It's not the first time that someone who has challenged the FIA and got a harsher penalty. The only reason this will not happen today is because they never heard his side of the story, so I reckon penalty will stay the same.
Perez and his ego + handlers might want to recall he was fired from McLaren. That pretty much sums up his lack of a career. He might improve and redeem himself but he was asked to leave. Not a good CV.
maybe im blind but no matter how many times I look at it it just looks like they both drove into eachother
Perhaps. Massa was on the outside line, following the track (if he didn't steer he would've ended up on the grass), when they where right next to each other suddenly Perez jerked left into him. At first I thought Perez's car must've failed as it was extraordinary to do such a thing. Unless Perez can prove his car DID fail and caused him to jerk left, I would urge the FIA to simply ban him for a race.
All it needs is one unbiased guy/gal with a good dose of common sense, with access to all the available footage and telemetry, and what they say goes end off. And the little they interfere the better.
I replayed the incident several times, and I just cannot see how Perez can be accused of anything wrong. If anything, I would blame Massa for a driver's error, by braking too late. As it is, I consider it a racing incident. At this rate of blame attribution, it won't be long before the FIA endorses drivers suing their opponents in case of incidents. But I wish the FIA was more active in penalising off-track excursions. There were many of them in Canada, and nothing was done about them.
William, here it is again, including super slomo and an onboard from Perez: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0PuSoufowQ]CRASH MASSA / PÉREZ - YouTube[/ame] I still fail to see how this is Massa's fault. This is 100%, genuinely Perez's. Massa was passing Perez, who had brake issues (hence couldn't brake late). Massa and everyone else knew this, so Massa could brake far later. When he's almost alongside, at much higher speed, Perez attempts the worst possible block and caused the accident. Perez had no hope in hell defending that position with broken brakes and the top speed difference. He should've made the move a while early and force Massa round the outside, and squeeze him on the turn in to the right hander. He might have had a podium out of it all.
Although not a collision, I was more concerned that rosberg didn't get penalized for cutting the chicane. As far as the championship they can penalize Perez all they want and it won't change anything (aside from a few points in the constructors but meh).
For me, the FIA should severely stamp out all these off-tracks, and not ignore them. Both Hamilton and Rosberg cut the chicane at times. Nothing was done about it. There should be a penalty for any off-track or cutting a chicane.
Hamilton gave the place back. They were saying in fp2 that no one will get penalized in either turn 8 or turn 9 in Austria for placing the car on the run off area Though that will only give slight advantage
I don't care about "giving the place back"; that's no penalty!! That didn't slow him down, damage his car even when he drove OFF the track. You don't drive off the track in Monaco! They have created all these paved run-off areas and short-cuts for safety sake, and now they are used and abused almost constantly. Build walls around the tracks, I say; we will see if they still play that game.
Well it is a penalty given that the sole objective in racing is to win. I don't see how that can be a good idea at all. Imagine putting a barrier around the track on a high speed circuit. Not so bad in monaco because it's slow and it's also a street circuit. This isn't the Isle of Man TT, we aren't trying to kill the drivers here 😜 I think Canada could be improved by making the run off area gravel - then no driver is gonna wanna cut the chicane and if they do by virtue of making a mistake they will only lose a lot of time and not be killed
Needn't be a wall. A sand trap if you want to be severe or a time consuming reentry path if you're the forgiving sort.
I like the idea of a 'time consuming reentry path' - that's pretty much what they've tried to do in Canada IIRC - you've got to navigate some pretty nasty speed bumps to get back on. Very good. The "trouble" with sand, gravel, kitty litter, whatever you want to call it, and the evidence supports it, is that these things simply skip across the top of it until they hit the wall. Ergo, the (much ignored! ) spectators have to be so far back that their experience suffers - damn, they wouldn't even hear any noise this season!.... It's different in a heavy car of course, but there's no doubt an F1 car stops much quicker on tarmac, and hence the run off areas can be smaller without compromising safety. Now, Charlie has tried to clarify that going "4 wheels off" can result in penalties, but if you don't gain any advantage, what's the point? For sure, if you make up your own track and turn the fastest time in qualy, that time will be thrown out etc. As with most things, it's never quite as black & white as we'd like it to be. Cheers, Ian
OK make it quicksand. I don't like penalties that have to be adjudicated. They take too long to be imposed and are subject to inconsistency.
Agreed. Your 'time consuming reentry' idea is fine, until we get into the details - there's some places it would work, like the one in Montreal if you miss the turn, but most places how do they force that reentry route? Maybe 'one way spikes'.... Sure, you can go over 'em, but you're not coming back that way! Cheers, Ian
I doubt that there are many corners that are wide enough for run offs that can't accommodate some sort of delay. Be it an extended reentry route or even a timed gate. Divers take every advantage available. Make excursions costly and they'll stop.
