911 is definitely not a bad car, but very good instead. But it's just still too far to be compared to 458. Anyway the price is about half of 458's price, so you get what you pay for.

911s are cars you either "get" or you don't.
If you "get them", they are very hard to substitute.
Ferrari's have a more instant and emotional appeal. With a 911 you build a bond over time.
I think that 911s and Ferraris complement each-other perfectly.

    Exactly, I get both as I have owned 4 Carrera's (2000, 2004, 2009 & 2011), 2 GT3's (2007 & 2010) and two Turbos (2007 & 2012 TTS Cab).

I had a 997 Turbo. It was a great all-around car. Very fast, comfortable on long drives, handled snow perfectly with winter tires on it. And completely reliable; I never had a single issue with it. That said, when I got rid of it I can honestly say I didn't miss it. It was an extremely good car in every way, but it just wasn't engaging to drive. The steering feel was far too light and numb. The car felt heavy into turns, and the 4WD just caused it to push. The sound of the car was very subdued, as were the looks. IMO the Turbos are perfect GT cars for long highway trips...relatively quiet, very comfortable, a decent amount of space inside given the type of car it is, and huge amounts of power when you want to have a little bit of fun :).

GT3s, on the other hand, are a completely different animal. I've had several, and currently have a 997 GT3 RS 4.0. The only thing it has in common with a Turbo is the fact that they're both 911s. Best steering feel of any car I've driven, the brakes are incredibly strong with fantastic feel, the motor revs forever, it turns in crisply, gives tons of grip on the way out under power, handles very predictably, sounds amazing (that traditional flat six sound...you either like it or you don't :) ), and looks much better than the Turbo (IMO...but I like all the stripes and wings :) ).

It's a tough comparison with the Speciale...I think the GT3 is more involving to drive because it's a 3 pedal car, the steering feel is better, the brake feel is a little better, and just seems a bit more raw. The Speciale sounds better, looks better, has a stronger motor, and is significantly more hi-tech. Without a doubt they're my two favorite cars ever, and it would be difficult to pick between them as to which is "best". They're different in some ways, but very similar in others, and IMO are very comparable. As others have said, I think they complement each other perfectly.

I had an '11 GT3RS 3.8. It is all of those thing and fun to drive when you are in the mood but I hardly ever was. 997 turbo was better, 991 turbo is better still. All just my IMHO.
The boy racer in me (I'm 58) did like the stripes and spoilers

I've had a 991 4s before my 458. ferrari has more emotion, feels much more special and has that je ne sais quoi that we all know about

I am not saying I can't do it in the 458 (have done many +700km days in it). Its just that the TTS is more "user friendly". In the mountains and on the roads with many corners etc. 458 is far more fun. Just "horses for courses" I guess.

My understanding is the 2014 991 GT3 is PDK only. What year are you taliking about?

Your RS in black and red looked great! I agree the Turbos are great cars; just depends on what you're looking to get out of it. They are a near perfect all-around car. Comfortable, rock-solid reliable, extremely fast, good in any weather conditions. I took my turbo on 1500 mile road trips to race weekends, drove it all winter in Chicago snow, took it out on back roads for high speed runs...they can do it all. But it was just missing that feel/involvement for me that the GT3 gives you. Basically that track "edge". So I much prefer the GT3/RS because that's what I really like in a car. That said, when I had the 1500 mile road trips to do, I took the Turbo, not the GT3, so that says something :). And for those trips I'd pick the Turbo over a 458 as well. Not because the 458 would have a problem with it (I don't think it would), but because the Turbo is more flexible...more space inside for stuff, can be quiet and comfortable when you just want to cruise, but with great power and brakes if you want to have fun. To me the 458 never quite manages quiet and comfortable in the same way :).

Thanks very much, I'm really lucky to have one. There are 600 4.0s worldwide, with around 130 of those in the US. Luckily I heard about the car early on and got the first spot on the list at my dealer, and ended up getting the only 4.0 they received.
