10 years ago I would have said go to State Farm with a muscle car or exotic. Not so much anymore as their desire to insure these cars has dropped significantly. Now I just drive newer cars for fun.

I have a 2011 Final Edition S260 as my DD. As said this is probably the purist production street car made. Just pure unadulterated fun.

I have had a few Loti and had them insured with Progressive before, and they paid out on 2 claims I had long ago without any issues.
I have since then switched to State Farm for all my cars S260, CGT, 16M, FS, LR4 and home. So there are some multi discounts.
I think I pay around 1600/yr for my Exige.

I have thought about Haggerty for my CGT but haven't researched yet.
Gluck on your hunt for the Lotus!

I would read between the lines... I don't think Haggerty wants to insure it.

In my Elise, I had my neighbor accidentally back into my car at about 3mph. The final repair bill (paid by his insurance company) was $14,000.

In my Exige, I was hit by a drunk driver. The final repair bill was $36,000, paid for by my insurance company GEICO.

These are not cheap cars to repair after even minor accidents. My cost to insure both cars has gone up every year, and I hear from many of the boys over at LotusTalk that many insurance companies just don't want to insure them anymore OR are charging outrageous premiums.

They get around this by limiting miles for your special interest car-I would imagine if you run up 10K miles on your 2K limit and get into a wreck your claim will be denied.

I have to send my insurer two recent receipts from a shop noting my mileage each year. I drive the Lotuses less than 3k miles per year and providing this to the insurance company saves me quite a bit of $$$$.

I don't understand how that could work.

If you get rear-ended on the expressway at 0830 at a location between your home and work how could you possibly claim you were not using the car for common transportation, which is specifically excluded in the policy? The company would simply refuse to pay and let you hire a lawyer but unless you could prove you had an appointment at your mechanic or whatever you would lose.

I heard a story about a guy whose Big Healey got hit coming out of the parking lot where he had stopped to pick up milk and the company rightly refused to pay.

Anyone who uses their classic to drive to work or shopping when it is specifically excluded is an idiot and I have no sympathy for him.

Um, I really don't believe such a policy exists or could even be enforced. I've never seen a policy that says you can't use your car for common transportation unless it is a show-only/storage policy.

Get rear-ended on the way to work at 830? Well, good luck proving I was using to get to work.

Insurance companies who want to limit usage do so by limited miles. They ask you if you have another car because whether you use it or not, having another car most likely means you're going to use it. I've never heard of anyone being forbidden from using it as they please. A parking lot is a parking lot, whether its work or shopping mall. 830 is 830 whether you're driving to work every day or getting breakfast every day.

It can be very expensive to investigate, prove, and litigate a claim. They don't do that unless it's very suspicious or very easy.

That is exactly what my specialty ins co said about insuring my elise. Have another car, attached garage, and limit miles to few thousand per yr. Dont care where you go or when. 1/2 $ regular insurance

Update: USAA sublets their insurance as my above post says, and they also, will NOT insure and Elise or and Exige unless you drive a daily driver no more than 5 years old. I will keep the expletives to myself for how I feel about the insurance racket. My F150 is a 2006 and I am not buying a newer anything to satisfy their "requirement".

I bought a black Lotus Esprit from someone I know on the Lotus talk forum while on a lunch break at work this week. Impulsive, yes, but I want something else to drive other than my 328 and I have no fight left in me to try to insure an Exige.

Congrats, Carreaper! Very nice Esprit...you made the right choice. And, like you, I gave up on the Elise / Exige search also.

Thanks. Perhaps when a few more years go by I will add a 2007 supercharged Exige. I have a clean record, credit and good income and I cannot get insurance on an Exige. I give up.

Thanks for the reply. I actully had them for insurance on my green 91 Lotus Esprit and my silver Ferrari 328 with no issues for 6 months or so.

They also refused to write a policy on an Exige as my daily driver is a paid for Ford F150 with 44k miles on it.

I don't get why insurance companies care what you drive everyday as they are NOT insuring it.

I have contacted: Travelers, Hagerty, Grundy, American Collectors, a few local agents, and State Farm. Cars are supposed to be fun and this is too much work. I work full time in aerospace and I am finishing my degree.

    Oh well! :)
