While I understand your desire to be careful, it's absurd to think someone will purchase a car without driving it. I too am careful who comes to my home but I have a top notch security and surveillance system.
After 6 different Ferrari models over the last 20 years, a 328GTS, 400GT, TR, 330GTC, 348Spider and BB512i, I too grew tired on the maintenance, parts and repair costs of Ferraris and went back to Porsche a few years back. The 993, 911cab, 991C2S and 997.TTS I have owned were all superior cars than all of them in reliability, comfort, performance and build quality and I still drive the 991cab and 997.2 TTS tens of thousand of miles per year and have only needed routine service, tires and brake pads at fraction of the cost of any single one of the Ferraris set me back on an annual basis. While I still love the Ferrari "mystic", and acknowledge that Ferrari may make the best sounding cars, Porsche makes the best cars and consistently score #1 in quality by JD Power, often beating or tying with Lexus.
Porsche is at one very far end of the quality spectrum and Ferrari is at the other end. Even though I know that I still love Ferrari's. My own circumstance was definitely on the high side for problems. I had just had enough. I keep hearing that 458's are superior in quality to former models including from my neighbour who has had older Ferrari's and is on his second 458.

I also have crazy security but I live on a large secluded estate and there are scumbags out there with ill intent and something about advertising a Ferrari for sale online seems to attract a lot of them. It was definitely interesting. I normally would not sell a car privately. I usually roll into the dealer and out with my new one but no one wanted my car on a trade.
I have a 355f1 which I am ready to part with. It has cost me Drew money on real stuff, not frippery. Headers. Cats. F1 pump. Electrical glitch not solved simply with GCK. But GCK also. 2 majors. " While you're in there" during 2 majors. Clutch ( not even worn past 50% after 33K miles, but leaking slave ruined disc). F1 actuator to try to fix bad shifting which is still unresolved. Probably over $70K over 7years/33K miles. That does not include tires, brakes, etc. Nor does it address my shrinking dash leather or missing elements F1 gear display which has been repaired 3 times already. Definitely doesn't account for the smog check headaches. Starting to think Elise or GT3. But if my car ever gets out of the shop, I'm done too. Hoping it gets rear-ended and totaled out during the next drive. Or it catches fire (but I already did the damn fuel distribution block recall).
1) surely you're making this up 2) what's wrong with you.. It's you of course and not the car 3) why aren't you smart enough/ well equipped enough to fix this yourself 4) good, sell it. You're an "unworthy" owner 5) Anomaly. 6) you've paid too much for the repairs.. I could have gotten it fixed for $200 but it cost you $5000 Etc. etc...
I had one of the best experiences I've ever had buying, using and selling my 355. I bought it from a fantastic guy who took a personal check. I had the car for 24 months with minimal issues. At that time, the header and valve guide issues were not well known. The thought was that if your car didn't have the problem by 3000miles it was probably OK. I also came to know Dave Helms through owning the car. I sold it to a guy who bought it for is father to satisfy a dream the dad had always had. All wins. I had heard that after I sold the car it went bad and many of items mentioned above occurred. I hope the guy I sold it to still enjoyed the car and I feel lucky. The 430 was supposed to rock solid. It's not. Header, F1 and water pump issues are popping up. I'm glad I sold it. I guess my fun to aggravation ratio got turned upside down on a $5K water/oil pump and potential $7K seal leak on the clutch. I too wonder what the hell maint charges on 458's will look like as they get some age on them.
Have you now coined a phrase to describe intensive 355 maintenance? Yes, you see lots of 355s costing Drew money to repair.

Great that you know them I'm sure they have spent a lot of money on their 355s. The only thing I get from that publication is what is regurgitated here on line. I gave up reading car magazines a long time ago. I'm just saying that is one source but people read it like it's the end all be all. The one vent who said after reading it he wouldn't even confider a 348/355 yet these guys still own their cars yet say I wouldn't recommend it. I really don't care what they print or what owners they talked to and printed have said but whatever I'm stupid. Not everyone will like a particular car and some have issues over others but there are plenty of owners here that love the cars and would recommend them to others. It's once source of info FC at is another (some times not so good source) That's all I was trying to say. No conspiracy theorist here. No tin foil on my head I could really give a ****.
Oh, I get it now. You haven't read it. You stated authoritatively the magazine trashes all V8 Ferraris due to some institutionalized hatred of them. You accuse them of making up owners and their statements to further their evil anti V8 agenda. And you don't really believe or have a basis for any of it and only make those statements because you cant handle your insecurities. You're pretty sad. Haha! I had a friend convincing me that the 355 horror stories are overblown. So I went and test drove one from a dealer, and it started a nasty oil leak that caused some smoking on the test drive, okay no big deal. They get it fixed so I drove the car again, everything's fine for the first 20 minutes then got caught in a little traffic and the car shut off on it's own. Had to be towed, and that scared me far away from the 355. Last I heard it also needed a clutch and the dealer had it for a year. Pretty sure my friend was trying to reel me into the misery club with him, similar to people with children who say it's a wonderful experience and try to convince you
I do understand someone saying to themselves when is it time to say enough. My car is approaching 40,000 miles and I wonder what it will be worth if I push it over the 50 mark. There seems to be some really nice spiders out there with great maint records for under 50k. That being said I wonder in my head the sense of spending $5,000 on maint or any other costs on a car that drops rapidly in value as I drive it. But I also know I didnt buy this car because it was a smart thing to do with my $$$. So I dont have a good reason to B&TCH about it. People have made some valid points you can spend a lot more $ than you need to if you want. I really stress the want part on maint. I don't own a $100,000 in tools but I can change my oil and do other maint including a new clutch myself or with the help of friends. I would like to see what a $8,000 polish looks like. I would think at that price it would include a engine out service and a &J. I take my cars to a local guy here. Seats out wheels off complete interior and exterior detail ..wax strip,buff, three coat wax under $300. It may not look like a $8000 job but I doubt anyone that I know myself included could tell. My 993 broke a distributor belt and fried a cylinder and head. After I paid to have it fixed (while they were in there had them rebuild the heads both sides new clutch and pressure plate) put new Yokohamas all the way around and then sold it for what I paid for it. The lady I sold it to has been driving it for the last 5 years without an issue ..just brakes tires and oil changes. So theres also an argument for saying I'm already this deep into I should drive it and enjoy it instead of letting someone else doing it on my dime.
Come on man, do you not own a Diablo Roadster? I live fairly close to Evans Auto and am pretty good friends with them, the money that goes into keeping Diablos running is damn near insane. 25k-45k Bills are common, and practically none of these cars have over 30k miles... You are pretty hard pressed to find a Diablo over 40k miles that has not had the tranny rebuilt or an engine rebuild (for some reason). A good chunk is bad driving and deferred maintenance, but the fact is that someone buying a Diablo better be prepared to lay down some serious coin....AT LEAST on 355 level.
Just think you could buy almost any new $40K car nowadays and drive 30K miles without even changing the oil.
I never did understand where the $8,000 polish thing came from? If I said that it must have been a typo. I used to own a high-end detail shop when I was younger and I never even let anyone wash my car. New wash mitt every single wash. When it went in for service there was a sign on the inside saying 'Do Not Wash This Car'. You can put a black car in direct sunlight when I am finished with it and you will not see one polisher swirl or imperfection. I have perfectionist issues with everything I do and drive myself crazy. I build stuff and drive trades nuts. My long time carpenter said I am the only one that can tell if something is off by 1/16th from forty ft. away. I probably need some sort of counselling or something.

Yep, but the difference is I know the repair bills will be high and won't sugar coat it. Its a special car with special requirements. OTOH, there are 355 owners that say their cars are as reliable as Camrys and late model 911s. That is the deception and denial that is the problem when somebody comes forward spending Drew money. However, I disagree that 25k-45k Diablo bills are common....I have been privy to over a dozen sets of service records and I have yet to find one over $21k. $10k?.....yes, common. Actually, the engines are very strong. Have seen a repair bill for a tranny an looked at a car that needed on also.
If this is true (and I don't think the % of cars over 30k miles is any different than similar cars) its not bcause the maintenance is keeping them in the garage......its because every time out its like driving a DaVinci painting, the center of everyone's attention. You can only take it in small amounts.
I am glad I don't own a Diablo. Almost makes the 355 bills seem cheap. Maybe one of the new ones because they are built like an Audi.
Like I said I spent an extensive amount of time talking to Evans Auto... I know what kind of bills they give out... I am not saying why, but a very large number of Diablos that go through his shop need lots of work, so it gives me a very good understanding of what it cost when you actually go out and buy a Diablo and actually drive into instead of posing in parking lots with the doors up. Yea, sellers might not have a bunch of money into it because they hardly drive them, but once you start driving them people often discover that a host of problems need to be addressed. Sure the Diablo can be reliable...but so can a 355...just takes cash. Auto Sales The Black Coupe has over 70k worth of service The Roadster has over 25k into it-I have a lot of experience with this car Friends SV had 40k into it at Lamborghini of Troy 91 Diablo traded hands last summer-Evan charged him 35k+for the service 92 Diablo in Ohio-guy is doing engine rebuild himself... A Red 2wd Coupe was for sale on this forum-Evan charged well over 30k for all the work.
