new 550 owner in an exhaust dilemna

Hi guys. I recently started driving my Maranello this summer. I have the capristo x pipe and capristo exhaust. However, this thing still does not sing enough. I want to hear the car do its thing. I have a testarossa with a stebro setup that is an opera. If I can't get this thing to sound the way I want, I'm going to sell it, I don't care how pretty it is LOL. Anybody have any ideas on what to do next? It has a nice grumble at idle, but it just doesn't give much in the higher ranges. I mean seriously, when I switched out the stock center pipe for the capristo X, I could BARELY tell the difference...

Not sure what you mean with sing, but if you want high pitch noise fit a 6-1 manifold to your current set up:

is that the 10 grand setup? Sounds great but way too expensive.

 

You could get a local exhaust builder build you a 6 into 1 manifold. Should be quite a bit cheaper. If you get it done in normal stainless steel I'd be surprised if it went over 5K.

Brad- Straight pipes from Bradan substituted for the X-Pipes. You already had an X-pipe with mufflers before the swap and now you have an X-pipe without mufflers. Straight pipes are louder and produce more hp and torque than X-pipes, so should be a winner for you. Plus somebody will be happy to buy your X-pipe who does not want a system quite as loud.

Seems like we had somebody here complaining about his straight pipes being too loud, but that may have been a 575 owner. Different pipes, only the rear mufflers match.

Your Hamann PGIIIs look nice, or are they HREs? Never mind, HREs.

 

Someone of another forum got an inconel manifold custom build for his straight 6 by the same company that makes exhausts for Mclaren F1 (the F1 cars, not their road car) and NASCAR. £3600 for the entire thing. No special friends at the shop either. Make of that what you will.

As for the normal stainless steel comment, isn't SS301 normal stainless steel? Plenty of manifolds are made out of that and it's a lot easier (and cheaper) to work with than inconel.

 

Thanks for the info. I was under the impression that they were the same. HMM. I have capristo mufflers already. Looks like I'll have to put a for sale or trade thread.

I have the Bradan straight pipes with the newer Tubi "575" tailpipes (street version, not race) on my 550.

I like the sound of that setup a lot:
- Nice and throaty during acceleration.
- Burbles and pops while downshifting.
- No loud droning noise while cruising at highway speeds (65 mph - 75 mph).

Where are you located at (e.g. State)?
Any chance you can hear some examples of other 550's in your area?
Quite a few of us are running aftermarket exhaust systems.

Not the same, but the Bradon resinator delete made my 456 sound like aeal Ferrari.

 

I was told that my capristo had no resonators. Is this true? Sorry I'm a newbie to all of this

Brad- The resonators on the 65 degree V12s were fitted as center pipes with a cross-over up until 575M Assembly Number 51797, in Summer 2003. After that, Ferrari fitted straight center pipes to the 575s, 612s, and 599s. If you look at this diagram of the 550 exhaust, you can see the center resonator part number 5, also colloquially referred to as "the cork" because of how it clogs up the exhaust.

OK, so that's $6100, only 20% off there. I was referring to the US. Things are way less in the UK. Also you mention straight 6, we were talking about a V12.

 

Forgetting the fact that a non insulated manifold in a street US version 550 or 575 is going to melt a lot of stuff.

Brad- You said you had a Capristo X-pipe. That replaces the center muffler/resonator pipes with that X-pipe. You sure that is what you have?

 

Yes, that's what I have and it isn't loud enough nor does it give off the sound diferrentiation when you go higher into the revs. I'm assuming this bradan straight pipe is significantly louder?

 

6100 for an inconel manifold, yes. Inconel is quite a bit harder to work with than stainless steel.

If it's really so expensive in the US, you guys are getting raped. The above is done by a company that normally only works on F1 cars and NASCAR, and it was a one off exhaust (with the possibility to get 5 more made at a reduced price, £2600, if he wanted or could find enough people who wanted one).

 

Now you're just nit picking. Even I could heatwrap an exhaust myself or fit a manifold blanket.

Anyhow, sort of a moot point seeing the OP isn't interested.

 

I deleted the rear mufflers entirely. I went with these. I have the stock center section and know that if I removed those and installed the straight pipes this car would wake up the dead, let alone all of my (still living) neighbors. I know that it's loud from behind but in the car it's pretty reasonable, which is perfect.
