Gasoline Prices In The Chicago Area

I remember when I drove to the Pebble Beach events in the 308 10 years ago that I refused to fill the tank at Big Sur returning from San Simeon to Monterey because the price of premium was $3.40.

Carol and I just returned from a 22 day, 6,500 mile drive out West (Our long planned "National Lampoon Vacation") Based on premium fuel prices in the Chicago area when we left June 5th, prices were no higher any where we fueled. CA fuel was the highest, but in line with Chicago area prices. I just checked several state fuel tax charts. It becomes judgementative from what I see, but I still see higher prices in our area, and the tax charts do not explain the difference to me. Many areas that had obviously higher transportation costs were still noticeably lower in price than our area. (Drove the Corvette not the 308 this time.)

 

By the way, I checked the GPS for max seed all the time on the drive...Here is Carol at 110 mph... East of Yellowstone...Gee, guess I married the right car gal for sure....

 

Drove to and from Pensacola, FL for a wedding last weekend. Gas prices in Alabama and Mississippi were 50 cents per gallon less than in the Chicago area. That is a huge difference

 

I've seen gas prices in Gary/that area as much as $.50 cheaper than Chicago proper...

Chicago is criminal with it's gas pricing as are the gas companies but that's another story.

Nationalize fuel... period.

 

Free market... period.

What is driving this is NIMBYS not wanting new refineries in the area and fighting any upgrades. We have a shortage in the Chicago area after a big closure a few years back.

More government will make it worse not better. NIMBYS will come from everywhere to complain and hold up any new project, and then they will be the biggest complainers when gas prices are high. More government will require even more upgrades thus driving prices even higher. Take a look at Europe!

The big five oil companies—BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, and Shell—reported $23 billion in combined profits for their third quarter of 2013. That’s $175,000 per minute. Together, these five companies earn more in one minute than 95 percent of Americans earn in a year. These profits were slightly lower this third quarter compared to 2012, primarily due to lower (but not low) oil and gasoline prices. Gasoline averaged $3.63 per gallon in the first 10 months of 2013, slightly less than last year’s record of $3.68 per gallon.

Even though profits were lower, the big five companies continue to enrich their largest shareholders and senior executives by using a large share of profits to buy back their own stock. This past quarter, the combined buybacks of the companies (save ConocoPhillips) were nearly $10 billion, or 43 percent of the four companies’ total profits. In addition, these five companies are sitting on more than $71 billion in cash reserves.

Big Oil is swimming in an endless river of profits and continues to invest millions of dollars to lobby Congress against eliminating their special tax breaks. Environment & Energy Daily reported on October 30 that:

Oil and natural gas lobbyists have spent more than a year urging lawmakers to maintain targeted tax breaks for extracting and transporting their products, but there are signs of a growing fear within the industry that impending legislation to overhaul the tax code for the first time in a generation would eliminate most of those incentives in order to lower the top-line rate paid by all companies."

Gary is $.50 less a gallon than Chicago to promote "gasoline tourism"?

Please, like most things, it's a rigged game to screw the average american.

 

Not just anecdotal, it was actually on the news a few days ago that Chicago has the highest gas prices in the nation

 

Are you alleging that big oil charges Chicago higher rates for oil than the rest of the country?

 

Gas prices suck in general but I do find it hilarious that there is a thread in a Ferrari chat board where the average new Ferrari costs as much as the average home price in Chicago and we get 10 MPG in them but complain about .50 cents a gallon ;-) I think they call that White Whine.

However, to add to this, my biggest pet peeve is the gas stations closest to the expressway are the most expensive just because of "Convenience". Not too convenient for me since I live 1 block from an expressway...

 

I agree but call me silly, I still look for the cheapest gas for my daily driver. My baby gets the good stuff.

 

It's the reformulated (oxygenated) gas we have to use in the summer here in Chi-town.

 

Was in ChiTown yesterday and a gallon of super was $4.58 at Shell.

 

Nah, it's the taxes. Because you can drive across the border and it's almost $1 cheaper.

Just have a look at www.gasbuddy.com. Cheapest Citgo price for super in Chicago is $4.23/gal. Across the boarder in Schererville $3.89/gal. Not quite a dollar until you look at the most expensive Citgo price in Chicago, $4.99/gal at the station on Roosevelt & Ashland.

 

Ok So Sh_t reformulated fuel at prices that make no sense...Scare because of no refineries...I purchase fuel in Timbuketoo out West with more transportation expense and purchase fuel for less than Chicago....so how much Valvoline do I have to use to accept what the stations charge in the area......Just being realistic....

 

Sams club in Naperville on rt.59 had regular for $3.48/gal yesterday. 93 octane premium was $3.91. Apologies if this is off-topic.

Love this and couldn't agree more. I honesty don't look at price, when I need petrol I need petrol and just move on. My BMW will tell you petrol prices in your area.
