Factory Radio in a 1999 355F1

I have the factory original radio in my 355 - and this one actually works. Unlike the one in my old 328.

The factory obviously has a cassette tape insert, but was wondering if anyone had ever figured out a way to get an iPod or other music source into the radio. I seldom ever listen to FM or AM, have XM radio everywhere else, but on cross country trips, I'd like to have my own music source.

Becker or SOny ?

Lots of Becker Ipod threads - stick the wire in the CD changer socket - not so sure about the Sony as it has different wires

 

Go ghetto and buy a tape-deck to mini-phone adapter $20. Works great and keeps the car stock. Only downside is the wire running from the tape slot to your ipod.

I already considered replacing the radio outright with an Alpine or a Pioneer but I just want to listen to music in the background without having to use my headphones.

I like the cassette adapter idea - will hunt one of those down - might be the best solution to my mini-problem

I don't understand - why do you think you need to use headphones? The radio I installed has bluetooth and I ran a usb to conect to my iphone mostly for power but it can transfer data too.

 

They also have adapters that plug into your cigarette lighter and iPod, then wirelessly transmit to a predetermined radio station, usually an unused one in the 80's. They are cheap, under $100, and work ok. I have had good and bad experiences depending on which car I use it in.

 

You could get a 430 radio, like I did. There is an iPod adapter that plugs in the back, but it's for the older iPhone 4, not the new firewire style. Love the stereo. I think there's one for sale on eBay right now.

Dave - the only way I can listen to my music is to plug my iPod into my Bose headphones. I want to run my iPod music through the car stereo system.

 

And you can do exactly that with the stereo I posted.

Also this should work although I have one and it is not working yet. Use it with a 3.5mm to RCA adapter conncted to the RCA inputs on the factory radio.

I just sent my F355 and 360 to a shop here in Brazil that does customization in cars. Things like stereo, window tint etc.

They removed both my OEM radio's, and installed an auxiliary port on each of them.

I works brilliantly, you only need a P2P cable, that costs around 5 $.

It does not have the problem of the radio interference that most ipod FM transmitters have.

And it was cheap to boot.

So installing an auxiliary port exit on your oem radio is definently he way to go.

The aux port was installed under the dash around the passenger feet area, so it is hidden. If you park your car and do not want to see the wire hanging, you can simply plug it off.
