Today at a Ferrari Club event I had someone ask me if I've owned my 1972 Daytona since new.

The car is almost 4 years older than I am.

Drive my car (silver 348) to to an acquaintances house, the first time he sees it, and the conversation goes like this:

Him: "What are you driving the Back to the Future car?"
    Me: "No, that's a Delorean"
Him: Takes another look. "Oh, that's a Porsche."
Me: "No, it's not a Porsche"
Him: Looks again. "Well what is it?"
    Me: "It's a Ferrari."
Him: Looks again. "Oh yeah, your right."

He isn't a car guy, but I laughed.

That's why I hate the "replica" kits so much. If anyone can "like, buy one and put it together," it's no big deal.

Sure, I respect the people with the know-how to put a really nice car together - but in that case, why not build something original?

Hardly any Fieros left that don't have some kind of cheesy and obviously phony "Ferrari" add-on.

Got no problem with it; doesn't really look like anything else, although it is a little bit Lambo-like. ;)

So, do these things really exist, or is it just in the idea stage now?

Not a Ferrari, but I was with my dad in his Quattroporte just a week after be bought it in Atlanta when he had to stop in a parking lot in a not-so-stellar area to meet a friend. A guy comes up to the window and motions for my dad to roll it down (which he stupidly did). The guy asked to shake my dad's hand and said "I've never shaken hands with a millionaire before!", to which my dad replied "neither have I." The guy chuckled and asked for some change but my dad didn't have any so he replied "none unless you take credit card." The guy replied "you seem like a nice guy" and left.

The new QP isn't even that flashy of a car.

A few classics from the motorshow I attended this past weekend....

#1 My wife overheard a dad authoratively informing his son that the F50 they were looking at was an F40

#2 Not sure whether it was the same dad but another one telling his son that our 348 was in fact a Testerossa

And by far and away my favourite.....

#3 Some complete clown in a bright blue Cobra kit car decided that rather than parking with the the other kit cars it would be better to park in the middle of a row of about 8 Ferraris (all red)????!!!!

After about 30 mins there was an announcement over the tannoy asking "would the owner of the blue cobra kit car parked amongst the red Ferraris please move it as it was spoiling the photographs!" Loads of people chuckled. This was immediately by another announcement...."that was a serious announcement - please move it!" Oh the shame...

I am most probably immature but this was the highlight of the show for me and still makes me chuckle every time I think of it :) ROFL

I'm ashamed to admit this but my wife and daughter were at the mall. My wife said that is a cool car what is it. My daughter replied that's the new Mustang. She waited a few seconds and said Oh, wait that's a Ferrari. It was a 430. I own a 360. Not that different of vehicle.

Now that I'm in my sixth decade I have some perspective on how delusional I've been about the appeal of sports cars to women. Girls hated the E-type I drove in college since there was no way to get into the seat modestly with a skirt on, and of course it destroyed their hair if you put the top down. Girls would concede the Lotus Elan I drove was 'cute' but complained about the noise, fuel fumes, and sense of vulnerability from staring at the wheel hubs of Semi trucks at eye level.
Yes when the crowds part as you wheel your Lamborghini up to the velvet rope of the Delano in South Beach or what have you, your date might temporarily forgive the engine noise and cramped cockpit, but she'd much rather be in a BMW coupe or a Bentley...

Unfortunately and ironically if your tastes run to the feminine gender, sportscars attract mostly guys, not girls...

So true - my wife calls my 911 the "sausage magnet" because it gets far fewer reactions from women than men.

You are both right. I could probably pick up any dude that drive by. The only time a girl notices the car is when their man is telling them to look.

I wonder how much of the "civilizing" of sports cars is attributable to the fact that women tend not to relate to the hardcore sports car experience?

I think it also depends on the age of the girl. Girls who are under 35 are into cars which cause people to look at them (or the car). Getting out of a 355 or other low slung car in high heels is not so bad when you are dressed to the nines anyway. Women seem to love putting both feet on the ground--legs showing all the way up to there--and then standing up with their legs together.

Once women reach a certain age, the sports car thing can be fun for running around, but for an evening on the town, you gotta go with something more elegant.

And, one more thing . . . the pros among us who have had many sports cars and convertibles . . . we know you do not have the top down in the middle of the blazing heat in the summer. You have the top up and the AC on. Top down is for when the weather is mild.

Well, Boys, don't forget there are some lady Ferrari drivers who do not worry about their hair blowing around, getting in or out of the car, getting a sniff of fuel from time to time, and who just might like the noise, say, that an F 430 makes at 7,000 rpm...
