Perfect example, Interlagos 2012. Kimi went up an access road with a closed gate. If he'd done a proper track walk he would have known he was heading for a dead-end.

I love Kimi, but he has been awful this year.

They apparently closed the gate on Saturday because of support races or something other. He used the road before in his Sauber days :).

Not the first time Buxton takes a dig at Kimi (I'm sure Kimi has refused him an interview once, or tried to shag his wife or something :D).

Funny that he says that Kimi never takes the track walk, but Mark Arnell says he takes them religiously.

The point is that Kimi entered the track to fast and we're lucky that he and others where not severly injured. We see it quite a few times during a season that a driver gets off track and rejoins but not before launching his car in the air by hitting a curb or bump. Are we going to ban every driver that lifts his front wheels upon rejoining the track? Get real, buxton.

Grosjean got a ban for having been in a situation one too many times by crashing and endangering others. Spa was the final straw. How many times has Raikkonen endangered others during this season? Or since his comeback? Actually, in his entire career? I'm confident that it will actually be less than what Grosjean did in half a season in 2012.

I commented on Buxton a few weeks ago; I like his commenting in GP2 but one criticism I have is that he loves certain drivers too much and they can do no wrong, and the same for the other way round.

He isn't having a good year, is he?

I fear that we have seen the last of Kimi fighting at the front of the field.

Now, he talks about wanting to do rally-cross ... like if he feels that he has reached the twilight in F1.

    Yup, he is done.

He should retire by year end and give his seat to the Hulk.

You know, if he wanted to keep racing rally cars, he should have stuck with them.

Do you believe he's lost such an extent of his talent compared to last year that he should give up? I can understand it if this was his comeback year, but it's quite obvious something isn't right, but he sure as hell hasn't shat out all his talent over the winter.

I was going to write a long reply but I'll just end up repeating myself, and I simply can't be ****ed right now trying to change the mind of people who have already made their mind up.

You know I'm a Kimi fan.

But I'm also a firm believer in the life cycle curve of a F1 driver. They all reach the point where they just don't have it anymore. F1 is super competitive so a small loss of peak performance makes a big difference. It can be measured in speed but also in how a driver finds his ways around a new car.

I think Kimi has reached that point. I'm also starting to wonder about Seb.

If you look at cases like Hunt, Hakkinen, Hill, Villeneuve or even Irvine you can see how fast the fall from the top can happen. It can literally change from one season to another.

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't expect anything great from Kimi anymore.

With any sport it is about peaking at the right time. Kimi has never been in good form when at Ferrari. Yes he fluked a WDC when the car was okayish but Massa could have easily bagged that one too ... hardly credentials for Kimi. Ferrari cleverly neutered McLaren with the spy gate, I still think this was Ferrari at its devious best. Enzo would be proud.

Kimi is very naturally gifted but you need more than that. It is a great shame that testing is banned as a few hundred laps would probably help him if he could be bothered (?).

Yes this years car should be taken to the nearest scrap heap but Kimi needs to beating his team mate to keep himself in the game. Massa pushed him hard, as did Montoya (who incidentally won a Cart race recently) ... he is simply not the MS, Alonso sand Hakinen level.

Bianchi is going to replace him in the tests.

Are they setting a plan B or what?

Fair enough :). Own opinions and all that. I'm of the firm believe that next year with the new car he can give Alonso a run for his money, although unlikely to beat him on points, but surely right on his rear most races.

Bianchi has been with Ferrari a very long time. I'm pretty confident he'll join Ferrari in 2016, and Vettel to come too whenever Alonso goes.

I cant believe that Seb is past his prime. It is the car not him.

I think all drivers are sensitive to the way the car's basic character - front end v/s rear end grip, etc.

That is the issue with Kimi and Seb this year.

I know you like to argue that all great drivers can adapt to the car quickly but there is evidence that even great drivers cant do it if the car is fundamentally 90 degrees from their style.

    Senna in Williams 1994 struggled
    Seb and Kimi's current struggles
    Alonso in Renault in 2008
    Prost in Ferrari in 1991
Hamilton with braking struggles in 2013
    Seb's struggle in early 2010
    SChumacher in second comeback

All these guys are world champs and struggled at times. You cant argue they are bad drivers because they cant adapt.

    Thanks.
I expeçt that we will see even stricter enforcement of off course excursions.
Rightly so. This accident could have been much, much more serious.

Ricciardo beating a four time WDC is a bad sign for Seb's ability to adapt and develop. He might be young but as a driver possibly past his zenith.

Many of the folks in your examples didn't do much anymore after their struggles.

The list of peak performances in F1 WDC however is sheer endless. The candle burns bright and short.

Yes that is norm measuring performance against your teammate, in this case Vettel is seemingly looking rather average, however IIRC he has had a good helping of bad luck this season.

Hero to zero springs to mind, but my gut instinct tells me there is more to come from Kid index.

If Fred does not get another WDC soon, I fear his twilight years will be on him sooner rather than later.

    Maybe, maybe not.

In the past he had no problem wrestling a "Minardi" to victory. Now he looks very pedestrian.

Maybe he will bounce back, but I doubt it. I'm willing to take a bet he will stay on 4 titles (nothing bad either of course).

It really does appear he needs a car that suits him, rather than him adapting to a car, as witnessed by the really good drivers.

No one should have let Kimi watch the movie Rush. Now he wants to be the poor mans James Hunt.
