Thanks guys. This is a labor of love. And also therapy for my mid-life crisis as I just left my job and am considering entrepreneurial vs. traditional next steps. Let's see what happens...

More progress today. And more pictures.

Looks like the engine will get all new bottom end bearings, just to be absolutely safe. Though the crank looks great (and will be confirmed by machine shop), a couple of bearings show some wear through the coating and into the bronze colored material and, alas, I shall just change them all.

As for rebuilding vs. buying a replacement, I will be way ahead. A good used motor is $25K (if you can find it) and a new one must be over $40K. I will likely spend around $5 - 8K on the motor and whatever else on AC, electrical, and beautification. Plus, the joy is in the experience and I've already gone this far so why quit now!

I don't know Chris Parr. Is he a local car guy?

And also thanks for the earlier poster on the note about the car repair charity I run in KC. Anyone interested in seeing a quick article on it, click on below and then kick further to page 39.

    Love these threads.
    Keep it coming.

Your son looks about the same age I was when my dad had me passing him wrenches under the car...get him started young...LOL

    good luck!

Yes, this is my youngest of three sons and he is my only "car guy". We just left the baseball game of my middle boy and my youngest and I went by the shop (he is 5) because he wanted to see the Ferrari engine and all the parts. It is interesting trying to explain what happened to the motor (hydrolock) to a 5 year old but now he can't help sharing all the details with the rest of the family in his 5 year old terminology.

My oldest doesn't like cars. Probably because when he was just a baby, I would strap him into the baby bouncy seat and force him to watch my fix my Alfas in the garage. I guess that strategy back-fired on me!

    Quick update.

Good news. Found out today that the heads have ZERO bent valves! That is good because intake valves are $150 each and exhaust are $80.

The valves were leaking as evidenced by a leakdown and spray test best the heads just need a basic valve job. Phew, good news!

The crank looks great and is in to check to make sure it didn't get bend at all and then simply to have it micro-polished.

The eleven remaining "good" pistons and rods are being inspected to make sure they are all really good and not cracked or bent.

The block will need one new liner pressed in.

I have a big order going into Autospares ASAP. I expect to begin rebuilding the motor in about a month so won't have many more updates until then (need to get the parts and the machine shop needs a month to get the block on the schedule).

Making progress! I expect to have this thing all assembled this Fall and then all the cosmetic stuff done over the Winter and then ready to scream around in it in the Spring!

This is too cool. When I was 16 my boss (a mechanic) bought two 355's that were water damaged in Hurricane Katrina and it was awesome to see him rebuild them and get them back to great condition for a steal of a price. I love these threads and look forward to seeing her get put back together.

    Thanks!

Today I built my laundry list of parts needed to get her back and running. Likely using Eurospares. Current tally is at about $5K but that doesn't yet include how I will get the AC compressor issue resolved. It looks like it has a rebuilt sticker on it already, and it it definitely bad (again at just 27K miles).

Now that the all the engine parts will be ordered and I have about a month until the machine work can be done and I can rebuild, I will turn my attention to the interior. It needs some cleaning up, some mats, some switches, a potential nav system install and the headliner reinstalled.

Will be a fun turn from knuckle busting mechanical work to the "coach work"!

My initial parts order will be $5K. This includes about $800 for new connecting rod bolts (at $32 each) which has me all pissed off! But not willing to leave anything to chance here as the manual says replace them (as they are torque to yield and therefor "one time use").

    - About $1K for the one cylinder, piston, rod.
    - $800 for rod bolts
    - $1K in gaskets and seals

Here's my current full list and prices through Eurospares. Took about 6 hours just to pull this BOM together.

    I met him New Orleans..

See Section at the bottom of the page for the Crescent Classic.
You might be ready on time, and he'd be a great source of info if you ever needed it

No, but he is my youngest and is way into cars. He sqealed like pig when I bought him that Ferrari bike ($700 off retail, I got it for $100). Well now he has the only running Ferrari in the family!

Right, but the force to bend that rod came from the engine torque.

OK, I figured I was due to give a status update...

All of my parts from Eurospares are on their way and due to arrive Monday. This is the long list of engine parts I posted to accomplish the rebuild.

As I've been waiting to get back to the engine rebuild, I've started on the interior. As a reminder, the car hydro-locked in Florida after some heavy rain sometime about 9 months ago.

So the mystery (on the interior) has been, how much water came in to the cabin (if any). And how much havoc did it raise. I knew I had some error messages (wiper sensor error, skyhook, HVAC fan not running) but wasn't sure of the extent. So I started pulling out the seats (the driver's to get the lumbar fixed (as issue shown in attached pic). Then floors to assess water damage and to completely clean.

The bad news is that water did get in under the footwells. The good news is not much of it. I have one or two blown modules. The wiper module is blown and potentially the "roof module" which works a bunch of stuff having nothing to do with the roof. The ECU's were perfect, as were several other modules.

I am also pulling out the stock Becker unit and modifying the bezel for a Pioneer NEX 8000. I've got a few sticky parts that I am having "sticky no more" resolve and have leatheriqued the interior and it now looks absolutely amazing!

I will start posting engine rebuild pics over the next few weeks.

Oh, and as posted in another thread, I got the AC compressor completely rebuilt for $380.

    Things are coming along!

Wow, what's the story on your car? Is it also a 612?

My car got very little water in it actually. I looked vertically for additional evidence of water and there is none above the driver's and passenger's footwells. And only on one side of the each footwell (as there is a cross-member dividing each cross-member in two).

I think my car went nose-first into some water and then upon getting out of the car, Some water flowed into the footwells.

Will keep you posted on continued progress... Can't wait for parts to arrive Monday!
