360 Spider 6-speed won't go in to gear when car gets hot.

Agreed..... and Nick, if changing both, I'd recommend doing one at a time to make the dial in procedure a little easier.

Just doing one for now. Other one wasn't nearly as bad, but if for some reason I lose more of my side to side motion after my forward/backward motion is in good standing, I'll know the culprit.

 

Alright, update time.

I got the part today from Ricambi America, but although it should be exactly the same as the part that's in the car, I'm worried about the end piece that is crimped to the rubber bushing that's currently on the car (picture 1).

In picture 2, you can see the small metal piece that came with the bushing in which I got, the piece is removable, as seen in picture 3, but that doesn't tell me whether or not I can get the piece off that's currently crimped to the rubber bushing on the car.

In the diagram, you can see that there's no part that looks similar to the one that's there on the end of the rubber bushing. I'm stumped at this point.

I doubt there's anyone who's replaced this part on their car (doesn't seem like a common problem) but is there any possible way that I'm going to be able to get the piece off and reuse it?

I see what you are saying. This should have been an easy change, but the parts are not the same.

 

I'm thinking no. That rubber piece is really clamped in there in the one that's on the car. That could be a possibility though.

Frustrating. Don't know what to do at this point. It'd be much easier to give it to a dealer to let them deal with it at this point, but there's none around. There's got to be a way to get this done though. It's just a stupid rubber bushing, lol.

Yes they did. I assume there must be a way to do it since I don't see the crimped piece that's currently connected to the existing rubber bushing on the diagram.

It may be a longshot, but is it possible that this bushing was previously replaced but improperly put back on the car? Does anybody else have access to the 360 and can look down in the engine bay and see if it's the same?

Thank you so much!!! Okay that confirms my suspicions. I guess the part has in fact been replaced in the past.

Gonna be a long day tomorrow lol. Gonna change out that part and then I'm gonna have to readjust all of the linkages for that cable. Great.

But hey, at least the car will be fixed!

Since the crimped piece that's currently connected to the rubber bushing on the car is longer than the new one, should I make the cable longer from the front and just adjust it to the right length (after multiple test drives to get it right) in the rear?

Perplexing.

Normally if a part is updated there's an indication of that on the parts lists. That doesn't seem to be the case for this part.

It's hard to see how that new part can work. The cable needs to be able to pull and push and given that the metal piece is loose on the new part I don't see how it is going to be gripped tight enough for the pull to be achieved.

I had a look at my own just now (have been meaning to check it for play since I first saw the video) and it has a quite different set-up. Mine's a 2000 Euro Modena and it seems to have rose-joint rather than a rubber bush as per photo below. Perhaps someone upgraded it along the way or perhaps there have indeed been different versions through the lifetime of the cars.......

BTW mine is also a euro. I suspect the monkeys have had clutch case apart in the past based on marks on the nuts.


Edit: Nick just measure from the sleeve to the bushing (from where it exists the rubber sheathing) before you take it off and get the angle of the lever throught the three bolts that are on it relative to the chassis. I'd get a piece of cardboard and then cut it as a reference before I took it off.

Also if the inner part as above isn't threaded.. it makes me wonder what is? Theres the nut that stops the part from moving.. but I'm surprised there isn't a second threaded coupler. Perhaps the cable provides enough tension to keep it in place. Hmm.. I wonder what the other models have.. including the 430..

 

Recambi does not show this as a separate part for the 430, it only shows the whole cable assembly, part #28. Can't see the part in question on the 430 but maybe yours has the 430 cable assembly. Would need to see a photo of the 430 to tell.

 

+1 and worst part 348 uses an older design and 599, 612, 355 etc. all use a mechanical linkage. Perhaps fiat part? hmm..

That might be an option from the UK ebay if doesn't pan out. Just don't know the diameter of the line and gearbox bolt.. You could change the inner cylindrical bushing to compensate..

 

No, neither of the pieces are threaded, which is odd. But I guess it'll work.

Hey at least you don't have to worry about a rubber bushing going bad anytime soon! I wonder why they didn't keep the same setup that your car has in the later-year 360s...

I imagine my old rubber bushing was crimped in order to keep it nice and snug since there was nothing threaded to keep it secure into place without the chance of it moving even a single millimeter. Nonetheless, I'll find a way to get it on there good. Shouldn't be much of an issue.
