Good point Drbob.
You don't need a pension to maintain a 355. It sure helps to have either skills or some serious cash though. You are lucky in the UK that majors are so affordable. I would not have to be so skilled if I lived there, because chances are I could just write a check. It sort of evens out. Less cost of entry here, but higher cost of care. Oh and 348s RULE!!!
I know all 355s are beautiful but curious to know which model (GTB/GTS/Spider/F1/manual) is appreciating more in th UK. I believe I read that the spider is fairing best to the low supply in the UK but not sure if that's correct.
Just took mine out for a drive and can't justify selling for 150,000. Frak these things are sweet. I'm waiting for the 458 speciale to drop so I can afford a daily driver and save the 355 for Sundays.
They are all rising the same. The three most important things which determine asking price are Condition History Mileage History is crucial, with stamps in the logbook being very important to the higher priced cars. People are simply not going to pay £80k+ for a car that hasn't been rigidly maintained by a dealer or highly regarded independent. After those three, colour is probably next on the list. Actual model (GTB/GTS/Spider) doesn't seem to make any significant difference, and neither does transmission or year made.
Frankly, I have never understood why people are so concerned with history. What matters to me is the state of the car today.
I don't disagree with you. As a buyer all I'd likely care about is the state of the car when I buy it. But it seems that the cars which fetch the highest prices are cars which were always nice cars, rather than average cars which have been turned into nice cars.
If you keep your fingers clean and take your 348 to a dealer for every blip and service needed it will cost you just as much to maintain as a 355. This idea that a 355 costs so much more to maintain than a 348 is just BS. They both have engines, tires, brakes, fluids , quirks , etc. I am maintaining mine myself just like you are your 348 and it isn't costing me anything more than your spending. Again if someone buys either of these cars and doesn't lift a wrench , the bills will be large both ways.
That i don´t understand... how could the history not matter to you? all hidden errors will come forward sooner or later...
I know what you are saying and what you mean, however it is simply not possible. Your car has so many more expensive parts and subsystems that it cannot possibly be the same to maintain. You replace or service your bypass system? We don't have one. Ever had to service your adjustable suspension? Don't have that either. How many O2 sensors do you have? More than me. If you had a spider theres the top assembly - I know you don't have one. Lets see, your car does take less oil than mine by a liter. Nah, I don't buy it. You can mitigate the costs as you do but a 348 is always going to be less expensive to maintain.
I'm glad you love your 348. Please allow us to love our 355's. I could care less "what it takes". Ugly woman are less maintenance than hot woman - nuff said
Guys, Jon is a well respected, long-standing member here who contributes regularly. His posts are as valuable as anybody's, no need to resort to insults. Or, as they say, does the truth hurt?
Vince, you can add valve guides and headers to that list But probably not a good idea to do so, because as you can see you hit a nerve among the 355 owners without even including that
What's so funny to me is that I never see 355 owners trying to put down the 348, while the 348 owners seem to love to bash the 355. Envy?
Mike, I hardly insulted Jon. From his profile he has never owned a 355 and neither have you or Vince. I have my hard earned money into one and have owned it for over a year so that makes me much more knowledgeable than either he or you about owning 355s. I would never go into another model section on this forum and post about a car that I have no experience in owning. It is rampant on this section and only in reference to 355s. The title of this thread was regarding the excellent price appreciatition occuring in the UK market. It was not about bashing 355s again as always happens here. It is just tired and old. I'm happy for you and Vince and all the 348 owners that you are thrilled with your cars. Congratulations!!! Good on you!!! They are the best Ferrari made in your eyes. Wonderful. I personally would never own one and couldnt imagine having one in my garage. I don't jump on any 348 thread extolling the virtues of 348s and drop my drawers on the model or owners. I don't get it. I am sure Jon is a great guy and with 15K posts hes been around here a long time as have you and others with voluminous postings. That doesn't make him or you or anyone else immune from criticism or indisputable in their postings.
I stand by my vote to have separate 355s/348 forums. Would be non of the my cars better than yours BS. I realize it may never happen, but there it is.
I hope these cars do appreciate, because it will make driving my never-for-sale 355 that much more special to me. But i will be much more afraid of door dings, rock chips, and stupid drivers if they approach Dino money. That might take away some of the fun of driving the best driver's Ferrari in the world, maintenance be damned. Here's some 348 bashing... I sat in a 348 with standard seats and being a very slat-sided skinny 6'1" 135 pounder, it is by far the most uncomfortable road car seat I've ever been in. I can't imagine wanting to drive an hour in that car no matter how good the road feel and feedback are! My butt felt like it was trying to squeeze into a chasm that was waaay too small
