I couldn't imagine sitting in the Audi forum knocking my old RS4 for the constant carbon build up..........and at least I owned one to talk about. You guys are really bored, very envious, or just plain annoying. I imagine all the above. You all should really find a hobby.

Just one thing to remember when enzo passed away ferrari was in big trouble $$$ in the early 90's you couldn't give a 348 away the show rooms were full. The car was slow and yes it had lots of problems...i wont get into that part.remember what the ceo of ferrari thinks about the 348.Then came the 355 one of the best looking and sounding ferrari's of all time..
Plus a great seller. Some would say that the 355 saved ferrari..I think that might be true.
So just think without the 355 we might not have a 360..430..458 today.

Said it before and I'll say it again, really, really, REALLY wish I'd added a 348 to the 355 instead of my current 911 (engine pooped). I could have changed the stock 348 seats out and still been way ahead financially, and I would be a 2 Ferrari owner!

Service history tells me nothing about how the previous owners used the car. Records may be nice to look at but all they tell you is what broke and what was fixed. Like you say, it's history, the past. They don't provide any indication of what might break tomorrow. They don't tell you if the car was tracked or if the previous owned believe red line was a shift point. What do you need to know about the car that records will tell you but an inspection by a qualified Ferrari tech won't? What does it matter if the belts/seals were changed every 3 years or every 6? I've read right here on FChat about guys who look to buy a 355 with books of records only to have it fail a compression or leak down test, or some other aspect of a PPI. Or guys who buy what is supposed to be a perfect car and a few weeks later, nothing but problems.

Service records tell the story of how the pervious owners cared for the car. Don't know how you can deny this John. You might be the first to not care about service history.

Agree 100%. Records are nice, but all it tells you is what was fixed. It does not tell you why it broke. Beating on the car, track days, autocross, etc are all unknowns unless the seller fess's up.

No, it tells you what the previous owner replaced on his car. I have a stack of receipts for my car, but nothing in there tells you that I take it to the track and autocross it with an occasional 5k rpm clutch dump here and there and a few bounces off of the rev limiter. That's more important than the shift shaft seal I replaced a year ago, but all you get in the records is the seal. But, neither are as important as how well the car runs and drives currently and what issues it does or doesn't have.

If I look at two cars, one has a 6" stack of receipts and the other has nothing and both pass a mechanical PPI, but the car with the stack of receipts has some weeping around the cam seals, some sticky switches and delamination of the windshield and other is in perfect shape, I'll buy the perfect one every time. Current condition (mechanical first and then cosmetic) should trump all other factors. At least it does for me.

Not necessarily. The point is that records are not the end-all be-all on condition.

Heck, even a receipt for a $7000 engine out service is no guarantee that it was done right.

Seriously, you rank having no paint work up with service records?
If you find a 15-20 year old Ferrari with "no paint work" then it was driven by grandma and not the way it was intended and god knows those cars end up having all kinds of issues from lack or not enough use or was a museum piece which is a crime in itself.
If you drive these cars (348 or 355 does not matter) "like u you stole it" - Plugzit
and actually use them as intended then you will have "paint work" eventually even with a clear bra.
Paint work is like maintenance, you do it to take care of the car from actually using it although not nearly as frequent.
I had my car fully painted at one time, the thread is on here somewhere with pics and I drive my car in the rain, on the track, in the desert at umm spirited speeds and I challenge you to find a nicer looking example of the 348 spider as I do the maintenance and paint work as needed and I drive the snot out of it every chance I get.
If I was selling it and someone said oh you had paint work done and passed, I would not want that person owning my car as they would abuse it by only sitting it in a garage and driving it to car shows and I would not want to subject her to that kind of torture. ;)
I agree with what some others have said, current condition and recent service history far outweigh history from multiple years ago.
Happy to hear that 355's are going up in value in the UK, I am sure 348's will have their day as well, time changes everything just ask the lowly Dino about how time treated it.

I agree with that. But records are a key piece to the buying puzzle.
