For the record. That is a great report that Pete posted.

I read something similar in Sports Car Market Magazine.

The extensive quote here is both impressive and ...well impressive. :)

Thanks Pete, saved me a job there.. Good read isn't it?! So glad I didn't sell my 355 for a 430. The prices are nearly overlapping between the two now! (uk wise)

I'm not rushing out the buy of a fleet of M1 Miatas in the hope of doubling my money. Let's also not forget the cost of ownership: insurance, service, tags, taxes.... There are much better places to invest that will give you equal or better real returns.

Collecting cars as investments is not something for the novice. In fact, I would venture that most serious collectors already have their retirement well planed and funded. I know I did, 17 yeas ago. :)

    I so agree 1000%

Cost of ownership to maintain them not to mention store them money is much better spent elseware

This is coming from someone that keeps 5-10 personal vehicles on the road at one time, retirement is cutting that number to 4.

Wow just finished reading the whole thread. What a joke! This is the reason why I hardly visit here anymore. Far too many insecure 348 owners and non owners seem to destroy any decent 355 threads. Yes I did say 348 owners. Yes Ive owned my 355 for over 10 years and have also purchased a 355 challenge but that does not make me bias toward the 348. I just don't like the car period and for anyone to say that the 355 and 348 are virtually the same car just shows the stupidity of the person making the remark.
Ive said this before and I will say it again. I have seen a million 355 parts transplanted unto the 348 and I have never seen one 348 part transplanted to a 355....Hmmm I wonder why? These two cars are as different as night and day and for the sake of this forum, the 355 and 348 sections should be separated. No there need not be a vote.....Just F ing do it. The 355/348 section is melting away before our very eyes because this did not happen earlier.
Whhheew, thats all Ive go to say.

Not sure of your logic !
If a million 355 parts can be used on a 348, doesn't that kind of mean that most parts are interchangeable between the two ?
Wouldn't that mean that sharing so many parts make these vehicles a little closer than night and day ? Only difference to me as maybe the parts numbers on the 348 where superseded by newer part numbers for the 355, but the parts might still the same.

I would equate collecting cars to make money is like playing the stock market, those that know make money the rest of us get lucky or not.

I already have a 355 my problem is it's like owning Berkshire Hathaway, if I never sell it I'm not going to make any money but it is nice to know that I could I guess.

Oops thanks Pete I really appreciate the article and the work you. Did to present it

Nicely stated Tim. Service records are not the be all, end all. Condition is the most important thing. Having a good PPI by someone who knows these cars well is also important.

wow.............someone's a little edgy here !!! Aren't we being just a little precious about ourselves. Are you so special that you need your own 'pure' 355 thread. How about you set up an even more exclusive thread. 3 members, me , myself and I and 2 cars your 355 and your 355 challenge. That way you would never have to read another bad word about your beloved 355's again.... and you wouldn't have to write profanities in abbreviated forms anymore either .... good point, think about !

Everything on the 355 is a huge improvement on the 348 and thats just a simple fact. The engine, the transmission, the body and frame are 30% more ridged on the 355. The deck lid on the 355 is stunning and is one of the most recognizable parts on any Ferrari. The air scoops on the 355 doors are self explanatory just by opening your eyes. The sound of the 355 is orgasmic to say the least. There are many changes to the 355 that make these cars look and drive completely different. One does not have to say much more and there is much more.
Now if the mods would just make 2 separate sections for these cars, it would stop much of the crap on here.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this whole section start as the 348 Brotherhood years ago and we welcomed our 355 brethren later with open arms. I love my 348 and the 355 is a fantastic car as well along with many other great Ferrari models I love.

For gods sake they are Ferrari's. There is no such thing as a crappy Ferrari. I know many 355 owners here, great blokes. Whats your problem ? When you go to Ferrari meetings do you only stand next to fellow 355 owners. Only talk to 355 owners. Do you turn you back on 348 owners because you are SO much better than us. I'm yet to read any 348 owner screaming to have their own 348 thread. Just chill buddy and stop feeling so threatened.

.... actually it started back at page one with Bullfighter making a flippant comment about needing a pension to own a 355 which was obviously a bit of fun poked at the article about 355s n pensions !

That bought you lot out like a swam of hornets from a disturbed nest.. gee, like the holly grail had been blasphemed.....talk about lacking a sense of humour.

I really think its a reflection of how sensitive you lot have become over your 355's. Its over the top and is why your getting such a rep !

Just hope you don't all go Jihad on us and start driving up next to our poor old much maligned 348's and blowing yourselves up !!?!?! :)

And someone asked why I had been away from Fchat for so long. No probs for the article to those that said cheers.

Gerry, just for the record I happen to know a little bit about the development of these cars, have researched it for quite a few years. I think what I wrote was that the 355 was a development of the 348, but the 348 was an entirely new car. There are many places where they made improvements to the 348 in order to make the 355 but there was an awful lot more difference between a 328 and 348 than there was between a 348 and 355. It was in response to a comment that the performance of the road going V8s went vertical at the point the 355 was released - looking at track times between the cars shows this is simply no the case.

In a similar way jumping up and down saying there are no similarities between the cars looks a little silly if you even just look at the parts diagrams let alone the cars themselves. To say the parts numbers are different tells you nothing - the numbers are different in many cases from a 1989 348 to a 1994 348 - they modified many parts as they went along.

Saying they are very similar cars, one a development of the other, the new improved variant if you like, is not knocking the 355. It would be if I didn't like the 348 but you may have noticed that's not the case. In a similar way when another member said something about me saying how much better a 348 is he's not really read what's on the page - I said anything but.

There's a lot of soul searching going on in the 355 ranks on here - Have we destroyed the 355? - etc. You know what, you haven't done but you're endanger of doing and people like you Gerry are to blame. An attitude that says "My car is great, yours is rubbish!" Is alienating 355 owners and the funny thing is you don't even see it. While many 348 owners would say the way round the 355's rep going down is to align yourselves more with the older models as a car that can be home maintained etc, and in so doing acknowledge the similarities between the 348 and 355 (because they're pretty obvious) people like you want to try to put your car on a pedestal and think that by rubbishing the other cars around it that'll keep it there. You're wrong and frankly being a tad childish. They are all Ferraris and they are all linked to each other.

I couldn't care if Fchat does split 348 and 355 because frankly a quick trip back has told me it's no longer a fun place to hang out. It's widely populated by folks like Gerry who think that there should be a hierarchy of ownership. Good luck 'saving' the 355s rep with that attitude Gerry. What a muppet.

See you all around some other time.
